Reviewed By Jack Magnus for Readers' Favorite - FIVE STARSLetters from the Pit:Stories of a Physician's Odyssey in Emergency Medicine is a non fictionmemoir written by Dr. Patrick J. Crocker. Crocker's idea for a book began with his plan, as a new medical student, to write a series of letters to his close college friend, Jack, who had always been supportive of Crocker's plan to study medicine and had also been interested in the subject. While that project never really did get past a few letters, and those were never actually sent, the idea of having them form the basis for a book became a reality when Crocker retired after nearly 40 years as a emergency room doctor and, later, the medical director of emergency departments. Throughout the years of his practice, he was acutely aware of the basic concept of "doing no harm"to his patients, an aim that is particularly challenging in the emergency room where split-second decisions can be life-changing. His letters share both his triumphs and what he perceived as failures.Letters from the Pit is an illuminating and well-written look into a place where most people fear to tread. While there will always be the patient who really should have gone to their general practitioner sitting in the emergency room, the subject of emergency rooms automatically brings to mind life and death situations, all taking place in an alien and terrifying environment. Crocker's letters brought a human element tot hat scenario for me. While still a place one would rather not find oneself, the author gave me insights into mindsets and motivations of the staff, of the professionals who put themselves in the Pit for the good they can do. As letters, Crocker's chapters are written in an easy, conversational style that makes the reader feel as though the author is writing directly to them. His frank and genuine interest in his patients and their well-being comes out in every story. I especially enjoyed his first letter, which was not set in an emergency room but did involve an emergency of sorts when, as a new doctor fresh from hisObstetrics and Gynecology rotation, he is called upon to deliver a baby who wasn't waiting a moment longer. That letter revealed him to be a person who could laugh at himself, and who easily shared his trepidation and utter confusion, and it had me instantly ready to follow Crocker as he shared the details of his practice. Letters from the Pit is most highly recommended. This is for the back cover reviewsIn a culture of comic bookheroes, it's gratifying to be reminded that there are real heroes outthere. I like medical narrative non-fiction, and this is solid, fun, and informative work. I enjoyed the stories being framed through the doctor's letters to his brother. It offered a whimsical tone and closeness we might have missed had he written to the world. His stories are fun and often exciting, and his self-effacing style is refreshing among physician authors. Anyone interested in ER work (or who has ever been to an ER) will enjoy and learn from this book. Well done.
The book is a compelling read taking you into the private world of a physicians mind and the ER where he works. Uniquely presented as a first person narrative you feel as though you are right there with him watching while he works, sometimes making life saving decisions, sometimes not. The stories are well written, compelling and structured to intrigue the imagination of both medical and non-medical providers. And the ultimate challenge for all emergency care providers is revealed; the challenge to separate a patients tragedy from their own personal life while maintaining the empathy necessary for providing the best care. Once I started reading I couldn't put it down. I recommend it highly for all audiences.
This book will capture your interest and keep you reading to the very last page. It is written so anyone can understand the stories Dr Crocker has chosen to share. I had the privilege of working aoongside Dr Crocker for many years. He is one of the best ER docs and has an amazing writing ability. Thanks PC for the trip down memory lane. I am anxiously awaiting the next book.
As an ex nurse but not in emergency medicine I always enjoy non-fiction hospital stories. Patrick Crocker writes well and displays empathy for his patients. I didn’t care for the ‘letter’ format, irritating and unnecessary. The vignettes sit well on their own and I found the Dear Jack at the start of each chapter distracting. One thing that made me gasp, and it has nothing to do with the author or the writing is in a chapter Dr Crocker writes about the large, locked drug dispensing machine that can only be accessed by inputting the patient’s insurance details. For a person from a country (New Zealand) with a social welfare system where access to healthcare is available AND THE SAME for all residents of the country be they poor or wealthy, I find the US healthcare system bewildering and inhumane. Sure, our system is a long way from perfect and being able to afford private health insurance speeds things up, but in acute cases everyone is equal.
This was very interesting format and I liked it. It kept the book rolling and not bogged down. It takes a special man to choose this “specialty.†Your empathy and care is refreshing in this age of tech medicine. And it is a special field. It’s as if you don’t have to think things through. Rush headlong into a treatment without considering the consequences of being wrong. Thank you PC.
One of the best medical nonfiction books i have read. Loved the format. Medicine today needs more Dr. Crockers. Please write another book!
As we find ourselves in the midst of what many people view as a healthcare crises, it is refreshing to read an honest, humanizing, first-hand account of the tribulations in the ER. Empathy, often lacking in healthcare, stands out in this series of personal vignettes shared by Dr. Crocker. An excellent book that definitely leaves the reader yearning for more. If only we could clone your brilliance, passion, empathy and understanding Dr. Crocker!
This book allows you to step into the life of a ER doctor. Dr. Crocker pulls you into each and every story. You will laugh and you will cry. It is a must read for anyone who loves or even hates medical stories.
