This is one of the last books I ordered to teach myself Korean; I literally purchased almost every major book on grammar, vocabulary, idioms, slang, bad words, sentence structure, pronunciation, conversation, etc. Yet there are wonderful bits of information in this paradoxically "big" little book that are either not in the other books or are explained more simply and more clearly here. There is so much information in this little "big" book and I can't understand how they can print so small yet the print is so clear to the eye: perhaps it is because they use boldface and deep colors and high-quality paper. Everything is very easy to read.You get a lot of cultural information in this little big book that makes you feel a friend is giving you a tour of her or his native Korea: that is a big plus about this book. Again, I actually ordered this book just out of curiosity, and because I had already purchased almost every major Korean language book out there. What a pleasant surprise to see that perhaps this should be the first book I read through fully to give myself a quick, yet thorough, overview of the language and culture.As someone who taught himself German, and is a native bilingual Spanish speaker with a Ph.D. in English, I highly recommend this little "big" book. It's simply wonderful for getting a solid overview of the language and culture! It is perfect for the traveler to Korea or Yanbian province in China (which used to be Korea at one time, but was annexed by China: Korean is still the main language in Yanbian taught in the schools and spoken at home by the Korean people living in this formerly Korean lands). This phrasebook is so legit. It explains so many things, i.e. how to pronounce things, how the Korean language distinguishes consonants, a guide to grammar of basic sentences, the alphabet and how each letter is pronounced, singular and plural words, etc. The subject matters range from Practical, Business, Social, Safe Travel & Health, and Food (with allergy and vegetarian information). It includes great pictures pointing out words for things shown in the illustrations! It even covers topics you didn't know you might need, like How to Talk to Children (is this creepy? LOL). It also includes a dictionary separated by "English to Korean" and "Korean to English", and a great index! For every section, it provides "Listen For" for phrases people might say to you. Bloody brilliant compact travel book. 10/10 would highly recommend. I'll probably also buy Lonely Planet's phrasebooks for other languages too.

This is a very well made and complete book for those planing a visit to South Korea. Highly comprehensive, considers everything a tourist may need to express. It also works great as introduction to Korean basics.Includes "culture tips" so you don't get lost in translation, which is highly useful if you couldn't research everything before your trip.Also, look how small it is for 270 pages!

Too small and I have no background in Korean so it’s hard to understand. Not worth the price. Hopefully I’ll get some use out of it with additional learning aids.

This is a comprehensive little pocket sized travel book for learning some Korean and Hangul phrases. Wish it was a bit more beginner level though. Smaller than I expected, but I guess it's made for travel. Arrived relatively quickly. Will be a great stocking stuffer this christmas.

There is almost too much information in this book. I just wanted/needed an easy, basic phrasebook. Is a good reference if you are trying to learn Korean and Hangul.

Perfect! A small easily carried super handy phrasebook for traveling around South Korea! especially with the menu for vegetarians and special requirements. (kosher, Halal, and Allergies!)Totally would recommend to anyone who plans on visiting or living in South Korea!!

My eight year is loving this book. I read it first before letting her read it and felt there was only a few things that she didn't apply yet to her but she still read the whole book and we talked about things in the book that she questioned and didn't understand. All in all its a great beginner book and the next book we get will explain about babies as this book only talks about the girls body and the changes coming. Excellent book. As a side note, the previous reviews I read before I purchased the book was excellent and is really helpful in making the decision exactly what book to get.

I really believe this book is aimed at such a wide group of ages. I appreciate the style the information is given, but I think the range of subjects it so broad in age. From beginner information about puberty to the not so beginner information about first visit to a gynecologist. Speaks of healthy eating and goes into eating disorders. Talks about stress and about abusing drugs. While it does it very eloquently from an adult's point of view, my daughter being 9 doesn't know what getting high means. I understand that this conversation needs to happen and it will, but when looking for a book about what is happening to her body, I don't believe I need to cover what getting high exactly means (which it doesn't, just expects it's reader to know what getting high is). I know many will tell me I am living in a bubble, and maybe that is true, but she already has so many concerns about growing up and the changes happening. I don't need to give her more to worry about before she is ready to know about. I do believe the author mostly does a good job of explaining the subjects, but the subjects are broad for a specific age group.

I read this book before giving it to my 10 1/2 year old. It's well written and age appropriate. It has some really great information about development, how to take care of your body, and why god hygiene and eating habits are important. My daughter already said "ew!" to the chapter that touches on boys and romance....good to know puberty isn't in full swing just yet for her :)

I gave this to my 9 year old. I read it first. IT goes over body changes without getting into sex. So it's a great book for them to start learning about the changes and letting you wait a little to get into more mature topics.

Great book for us mom's with daughters just starting to experience the changes in life that all of us females go through. Since I had no idea how to talk to her about these things I found this book a helpful reference that makes those changes seem no so scary to her.

I read the book when it arrived. It's very easy to understand. My daughter and I already started talking about some body changes, but this will help her understand more and maybe ask some questions without being embarrassed. Growing up can be a scary thing, and there is no reason for it to be, with simple, honest answers.

this book is AWESOME. Definitely helped with my 10 year old's questions. We read the book together and it was a good ice breaker. She feels empowered with the knowledge it gave her.

I got this book for my 10 yr old daughter. I wanted to get something to help her learn more about her body and make her more comfortable with how its changing. I also didn't want anything that talked about sex since she is only 10. This book was perfect. As soon as it came she read it cover to cover and felt comfortable asking me about the subjects in the book. Definitely recommend!

Why do people convert to the Watch Tower Society? How can these Jehovah's Witnesses persist in their belief that the end of the world is imminent? In this academic study, Holden, a British sociologist, attempts to understand why the strict and austere Watch Tower Society continues to enjoy rapid growth. This is neither a primer on the danger of "cults" nor an endorsement of the Witnesses' distinctive beliefs, but a balanced ethnography that draws upon interviews with both adherents and ex-members to help readers understand what it is like to be part of the Society. Holden's main thesis that the Watch Tower is engaged in careful and ongoing negotiations with the secular culture that surrounds it is a nuanced one, especially compared to previous studies that have depicted the movement as little more than an extremist rejection of modernity. The study bears the marks of the dissertation that it once was: it overexplains how data were collected and analyzed, surveys the historiography of the topic (which, as Holden points out, is all but nonexistent in the case of the Witnesses) and relies heavily on a few theorists (in this case, Clifford Geertz and Mary Douglas). Only one criticism: very very repetitive! It would have made a far better journal article than a book. However, the author offers theoretical explanation of converts, how such conservative movement stands to flourish in modern day, and paradoxical relationship between JW and modernity. Highly recommended students of sociology of religion or religious studies.

If you or someone you know are studying with Jehovah's Witnesses you owe it to yourself to read this. There are very few objective third person analyses of the religion available, this is one of them. Holden, neither a member that sees things through rosy colored glasses of faith, nor a former member embittered by disappointment or a bad experience, provides an analysis that is as up to date, accurate and unbiased as you will find.

Excellent resource to unmask the satanic claims of the Jehovah's Witnesses Governing Body. If you are a Christian read this book to add to your arsenal of weapons against this evil cult.

British sociologist Andrew Holden wrote in the Preface to this 2002 book, "And so to the objectives of this book. I write for an academic community, or indeed for anyone with a sociological interest in religious movements... In the pages that follow, I offer a glimpse of the modern world through the eyes of a group of religious devotees... The book is ethnographic and, as such, it is concerned with the Witnesses' version of reality... the book is not about comparative religion but about the lives of a group of people who claim to be IN but not OF the world."Here are some quotations from the book:"(Charles Taze Russell) also sold what he called 'miracle wheat' to credulous farmers at $60 a bushel. The fraud was eventually stopped by the federal authorities, who made him refund the money." (Pg. 18)"If there was one feature of the Watch Tower community that occupied my thoughts in the initial stages of my fieldwork, it would have been the absence of mysticism." (Pg. 58)"...someone claiming to have had an experience of a transcedental nature would be most unlikely to find solace in a Kingdom Hall. At no point in meetings is time made available for individual prayer... Although short prayers are recited, these last no more than two or three minutes and serve mainly to open and close meetings." (Pg. 64)"Several members told me that they preferred to partake in those aspects of Witness life such as Bible study and attending large meetings rather than ministry work because of the rejection from large numbers of uninterested sceptics." (Pg. 75)"Young Witnesses who intend to undergo baptism rarely progress to college or university. I was raised Baptist; however as an adult, I still had several unanswered questions or certain things that did not seem practical. Over the past five years, I have been in search for the “truth” about life. I have studied with Catholics, IHOPers, Muslims and every class of Christianity. For the past 10 months, I’ve been studying with Jehovah Witnesses, so I have a little insight on the books topic. Holden did a good job pointing out the general structure and routines of the Society. The Society has created the perfect organization, with imperfect people and Holden research revealed that truth. The book is well organized and structured like a textbook. It starts with why the Witness believes “the end is near” and ends with Holdens conclusion of his experience in learning about the Society. He even has a glossary in the back to help you better understand the Jehovah Witnesses terminology. Holden also help people to understand that Witness are good people. I grew up running, hiding from them or pretending that we were not home, and after reading the book, you may not necessarily want to convert, but you may be more likely to open the door or at least be a little nicer when you tell them you’re not interested.Andrew Holden, a British Sociologist has taught various level of sociology throughout his career. He attended several meetings and interviewed people who had been in the organization. Holden tries to stay neutral throughout the book, but in my opinion, he fails to do so. He seemed a little ethnocentricit. For example throughout the entire book Holden insinuated that the organization was cult like. It’s true that Witness are “in” the world, but not “of” the world. This simply means that they live in the same communities, work the same jobs and go to the same schools as everyone else, they just don’t participate in ungodly activities.( same as other religions.) At the end of the book I realized, that everyone’s perception of things is different. Holden attended several meetings, and the things that he took for the people and the meetings were totally different from me. Over all I liked the book; for what it was, it was a pretty easy read. If you’re looking for general information about the operations of Jehovah’s Witnesses or your studying sociology, then this is the perfect book for you. However, if you are in search for the truth and want a sincere understanding about the religion, then its best to attend your local Kingdom Hall form your own opinion.

There are few places you can search for stories with deep meaning and great values to teach your kids. I always look for those books that may contain stories that are treasures for parents that want to teach their kids with meaningful words and actions. This is one of those books.

Can't wait to get into these stories. I love stories that can impact your life in a personal way. Lots to learn from authors like Gibran, Og Mandino and now the Rabbi.

As always, Rabbi Krohn brings wonderful material to the table.

These stories and anecdotes of one of the great religious speakers of Jerusalem reveal his warm and humorous personality and his great devotion to Torah.An example of a story. A great scholar on his death- bed recites the confessional outloud and realizes he wishes everyone to admire him in this , understands then that in his final act of piety it is his yetzer hara his evil impulse which is most strong.It is paradoxical insights of this kind and not the stories which have obvious and pat conclusions which make this work interesting.

I love this book! I am a big fan of Rabbi Paysach Krohn and his mentor The Grand Rabbi Sholom Schwadron.The stories in this book are awesome! If you are looking to inspire yourself to become a better Jew this is a terrific place to start.
