I love this book! It's informative, personal, timely, easy-to-understand, and hilarious! My husband can attest that I laughed out loud numerous times and then re-read the passages to him because I just had to share what I'd read with someone else.Informative:Each chapter is informative without being unnecessarily long -- the author does not over-explain. I learned new and intriguing information about how hormones impact human behavior on every page.Personal:The author draws on examples from her own life as the mother of twins, which really personalizes the book. This is not a collection of dry academic articles. It's an intimate discussion of how hormones impact human life.Timely:The author explains how an increasing scientific understanding of female hormones has impacted society over time and how it is impacting society in the present day. Fascinating stuff!Easy-to-understand:You do not need to have a background in biology or psychology to understand this book. Estrogen is "the big one," Progesterone is "the double dealer," luteinizing hormone as "the bungee jumper," and gonadotropin-releasing hormone as "the stage manager" who runs the show (p. 61).Hilarious:SO funny. And serious. But seriously funny. My favorite quote: "No one wants to tell the kids what happened to the remains of Charlotte the spider (of Charlotte's Web) after she spun her miraculous web to save Wilbur the pig, then had her babies and gracefully passed. In reality, Charlotte's cheerful, tiny offspring, which appear at the end of the story, would have devoured their mother's dead body as their first meal, as newly hatched spiders are known to do" (p. 194).
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book! Very informative.
"Read this book! From puberty through menopause, it's everything you need to know, and fun to read too!!"
This is an amazing read. It's pact full of information in a fun way that reads nicely and made me smile. I would recommend this book to young adults on up. As a female, I found this information to be very helpful and I wish that when doctors talked about birth control they explained what we where choosing for our body. I can not express how impactful the information on this book is. This will help me giggle over my daughters, especially with the preteen/ teen age. Don't worry I will also laugh about myself while eating some chocolate cake.... or ice-cream for breakfast!
Dr. Haselton’s book is a fascinating look into women’s hormones and how they affect human behavior. I am not a scientist nor in the medical field, but recognize this book as the first serious study of female hormones with a great deal of ground-breaking data that can be used to solve other gaps in medical and behavioral research on women. As Dr. Haselton notes, there needs to be a call to action for more research on female brains and bodies. Her book provides much needed insight into our bodies and cycles--both monthly and throughout a woman’s lifetime—that should be taught to every adolescent girl and reiterated as we age.Dr. Haselton’s work appears objective and questions conventional wisdom. Only through rigorous research can we change what is considered “common knowledge.†We truly need more scientists like Dr. Haselton to design studies that do not purposely result in the answer the researcher wants to hear. Overall, this book is a great read and I really enjoyed Martie Haselton’s personal stories woven throughout. The book also includes many revelations on issues that most women can relate to and have an “a-ha†moment, such as the evolutionary explanation of the difficult relations between moms and their adolescent daughters. Another interesting section is on the transfer or microbes during kissing. The recent explosion of studies on the microbiome and its effect on everything from mood to immunity can now add another piece to the puzzle. I would like to see a holistic study of all of the affects microbes have on our bodies and behaviors, with additional research on all the ways humans share microbes through kissing, breastfeeding, etc.I find the argument Dr Haselton makes supporting Darwinian feminism refreshing. The more we understand ourselves the better we can help ourselves, whether through channeling our hormonal nudges or ignoring them, as cited in the book. Women’s health issues are now being studied much more frequently than in past decades due partly to the large increase in women scientists and physicians. Dr Haselton’s continued work on hormones can add an important element to the study of diseases that affect women more than men, such as Alzheimer’s and auto-immune diseases, and I hope she is planning to add her expertise to combat these debilitating illnesses. Finally, it is interesting that evolutionary biology and psychology are helping us solve many seemingly intractable modern problems. Over the past few years I have studied (as a layman) the ketogenic diet and fasting and they are the key to metabolic health for most people, and can help prevent many diseases of aging. I wonder what other surprises we will find from studying our ancestral behaviors!
A more aptly worded title could be - Estrogen: an evolutionary narrative that could fit behavioral changes linked to the ebb and flow of this hormone.Estrogen, with a hat tip to a small handful of other hormones that are directly linked to a woman's cycle, is the only hormone explored in this book. It's an easy and quick read sprinkled with humor. What it does discuss could be much more concise. I did learn a few interesting things from the read, but this is only one cog in the wheel of an elaborate network of hormones.
Inadvertent new dating tip! This book on my lap during a recent plane ride was better than having a puppy or a baby at the park! Thanks Dr. Haselton! That's the first great thing about this book from a man's perspective! On a more serious note, this book is an educational read for anyone interested in biological drivers to attraction for a woman. Ms. Haselton does a great job of taking a scientific subject and mixing in her research, and that of others, with light and humorous commentary.
