Amazon.com Review

There are those who would argue that Bill Russell was the greatest basketball player ever, not because of his physical talents so much as his ability to lead and work within a team. Recently, Russell has been a regular on the lecture circuit, helping businesses understand how to take the principles of "Celtic Pride" and apply it to their corporate cultures and customer relations. In Russell Rules, he breaks downs the qualities that helped to earn him 11 NBA championships into 11 leadership lessons that should enlighten just about anyone, including managers, entrepreneurs, and educators. --Harry C. I was severely disappointed by this book.First off, I am a huge admirer of Russell, on and off the court. I have loved his writing in the past, his book "Second Wind" is probably my all-time favorite. I admire his courage, his humor, his stubbornness. I still think he was the best NBA color commentator ever!!!But this book is awful. Part of it is the whole genre, that successful sports figures and organizations can teach executives and companies the secrets of success. There is only so much you can say on the subject, and it has been said too many times and often by people who should keep their mouths shut. Just off the top of my head, Mike Jarvis who was fired mid-season by St. John's University is an example of that. That said, there are four other drawbacks with the book.First off, it is incredibly repetitious. His 11 points can be easily condensed into 4 or 5. Midway into the book, I felt it would make a decent magazine article but it was stretched out terribly. How many times do we have to hear about how he and KC Jones were such students of the game.By harping on the lessons learned on the Celtics, Bill goes against much of what he has said in the past. I have heard him many times state that winning and losing has nothing to do with character, it has everything to do with who has the better players. If you can reconcile that with the premise of this book, you have me.Another issue is his plugging of the National Mentoring organization. I agree with the virtues of mentoring, but the whole plugging seemed like Russell trying to justify to himself the reason for writing the book. Finally, I firmly believe that you are as good as your record says you are. Russell often says that winning is the only measure. But away from the Celtics, Russell was not much of a winner. He was involved with the Sonics for a few years and had a brief period of success with them. But after a period of subsequent failure, he left by mutual agreement. He was bored and sick of the job and they weren't asking him to stay. He subsequently took a coaching job with the Kings that was even more disastrous. So if Russell has all the lessons of success from his Celtic days, then why couldn't he repeat them outside of Auerbachland? If you were to look for ex-players who have repeated their stardom off the court, you can look at Jerry West or Bill Sharman. The book is not a complete loss. To those unfamiliar with Russell and the Celtics, there is some good information. Plus Russell makes some interesting comparisons between Wilt's style and his own. But overall, the book is a disappointment to me.

This is an important book that provides insights about what it means to be a real champion. It is one of the best books on success and leadership I have seen.

Sometimes the best books are books that make us think. That's what this book does, it takes lessons learned in many arena's of Bill Russell's life, though mainly basketball of course, and encourages the reader to think of how those lessons might be applicable in his or her daily life. I would definitely recommend it.

An excellent read and the rules that are outlined in Bill Russell's book can be applied to anyone who has an ambition to succeed in whatever endeavor a person is involved in. With the athletic skills that he was endowed with along with his mental and analytical attributes, success in life for him was a positive by-product. If anyone desires to make a positive change the direction of their lile, there is no better book.to read to achieve this goal

Best business guidebook ever

Great gift, time line received was great.I will order again.Thank you.

Bill Russell gives wonderful insight and detail into why and how he became the greatest winner of all-time. I am only 26 so he was before my time. Let me tell you, it is like stumbling upon a gold mine. Today's youth should read this book because he puts Lebron to shame. Great book and one of the top 5 players to ever touch a basketball.

This is my second purchase from this company quality books great condition. Would order again and refer

This is an amazing book. It is difficult to read about how a human being can be put through such suffering at the hands of other so called human beings. This reminds me of books I have read about nazi concentration camps and Japanese prisons in the Second World War. This is an account of just one day in the life of a man who was prepared to suffer and ultimately die for his beliefs. Whatever political persuasions one may have its hard not to respect what Bobby Sands was willing to endure for what he thought was right.Well worth a read.

A first hand account of a day in the life of Bobby Sands while he was taking part in the blanket protest against the removal of prisoners' political status by the British Government. A story of injustice and incredible hardship, this is a must read for people with an interest in Irish politics. Of particular interest to younger readers who did not live through this dreadful period in Irish history.

Bobby Sands will forever remain an icon of human resistance and an inspirational figure of the power of self-belief.'One Day in my Life' is an insightful account of suffering and determination. Its brutally frank, yet elegantly poignant, depiction of the horror Sands and his fellow freedom fighters endured for their cause is infinitely haunting ... but also incredibly uplifting. And against all odds, the fact this book even exists at all is nothing short of a miracle. An amazing read.

Nothing tells the story more accurately or deplorably of the abuse suffered by Irish Republicans like their own martyr's personal diary, letters, and poetry. While I was horrified by the conditions under which Bobby Sands labored, I was impressed by the integrity of his character and the inspiration it provided for so many others in similar situations. Although his poetry is not particularly noteworthy for its literary contribution, it is memorable for its content and the effort made by its poet to speak the wrongs he and his comrades endured at the hands of the "most civilized people on earth." It is indeed time for everyone to hear these words of anguish and hope.

I was very young when Bobby Sands went on hunger strike and subsequently died because of it. I remember hearing the news reports here in the United States as they talked about how Sands and the other strikers were petitioning to be treated as POWs because of the illegal occupation of Northern Ireland by the British government. There were many who viewed Sands as a hero and a martyr because of the ultimate sacrifice he made to a cause he believed in. Others view him as a terrorist who did not deserve the attention he received. I was 11 years old when Sands died, however I always found his story interesting. I thought the book was very well done and gave the reader a picture of what life was like for Sands inside the prison where he would ultimately live in infamy in. I did not look at Sands as a hero or a terrorist. I viewed him as someone who was very intelligent, someone who stood up for his beliefs. I would definitely recommend this book who wants to know more about Sands the man.

'One Day in My Life' may as well have been penned in the blood of Bobby Sands, as he describes the endeavor to persevere and survive abuse and torture at the hands of his jailers. In less than one hundred pages, that was first penned on toilet paper and hidden inside the authors body, he documents the events of one day describing how he and his fellow comrades in the infamous H-Blocks of Long Kesh Prison faced and resisted the state sponsored brutality with bravery, resolve and encouragement. Allowing themselves to exist in conditions of filth, cold and near starvation to protest their given status as common criminals rather than one of political prisoners which they were. This book is an account of true believers who surrendered their bodies, but never their minds or their espirit de corps. To understand their determination is to understand that they were willing to accept a slow, agonizing death rather than imperialistic tyranny. Foot note: Bobby Sands never left prison alive. A little while beyond the time that he wrote the original manuscript he was elected MP of Fermanagah and South Tyrone in April 1981. He died at the age of 27 on the sixty-sixth day of a hunger strike on 5 May 1981. Nine of his comrades, also, died on their hunger strikes around the same time. The death of Bobby Sands and the others did more to further the Cause than any number of bombings that occurred during the Troubles.

After reading this book I would like to know why these guards and the entire British judicial system weren'theld accountable for the terror they inflicted on these prisoners of war.

So inspiring and thought provoking. Beautiful in its simplicity and sincerity. Inspiring.
