Review

--SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL, Starred Review A young girl asks how much her mother loves her, even when she is naughty, and receives warm, reassuring answers. The twist on this familiar theme is that the two are Inuits, and the text and pictures draw on their unique culture: "What if I put salmon in your parka, ermine in your mittens, and lemmings in your mukluks?" asks the girl. Two pages of back matter define and explain the functions of various terms in Inuit life past and present. Charming, vibrant watercolor illustrations expand the simple rhythmic text, adding to the characters' personalities and to the cultural information. Ceremonial masks appear in the corner of several pages and on the endpapers, a nice detail in a well-designed book. --THE HORN BOOK MAGAZINE, November 1991 "Mama, do you love me?" Every child in the world wants a reassuring answer, including this small Inuit girl in long-ago northern Alaska. In a series of questions and answers reminiscent of Margaret Wise Brown's The Runaway Bunny(Harper), the child uses her imagination to test her mother's love. The answer is always a positive one, but the mother is also honest. " 'What if I put salmon in your parka, ermine in your mittens, and lemmings in your mukluks?' 'Then I would be angry.' 'What if I threw water at our lamp?' 'Then, Dear One, I would be very angry. But still, I would love you.'" The whale-oil lamp is pictured clearly, and its importance is explained in the two-page glossary at the end of the book: "The lamp in an Inuit home was never left untended because it was such a vital part of daily survival." The rounded, stylized watercolors are brightly appealing, full of humor and love. The small challenger stands with her hands on her hips looking way up at the tall, broad mother who has her hands on her hips; in another picture there is a huge hug which encompasses mother, girl, and doll in a mass of variously flowered dress fabric and black braids. The book is a beautiful combination of a rich culture and a universal theme. --PUBLISHERS WEEKLY, August 1991 "Yes I do, Dear One," answers the mother whose daughter asks her the question posed in the book's title. And how long will she love her child? "I will love you until the umiak flies into the darkness, till the stars turn to fish in the sky, and the puffin howls at the moon," responds the mother soothingly, employing images familiar to the Inuit people of Northern Alaska where this Iyrical story is set. Echoing the simplicity of Joosee's verse are Lavallee's stylized illustrations, which convey the austerity of the arctic landscape while depicting the bright, intricate patterns and textures of Inuit garb. A glossary of terms used in the text is included at the end of this striking volume, which uses a timeless culture to convey a timeless message. --PARENTS, December 1991 In a story reminiscent of the classic Ruraway Bunny, a child tests her mother's love: "What if I ran away?" she asks. "Then I would be worried," her mother answers."What if I turned into a polar bear, and I was the meanest bear you ever saw...and you cried?" says the girl. "Then I would be very surprised and very scared But still...I would love you" comes the reassuring reply. The arctic setting adds an intriguing dimension to a universal story. This Book is a beautiful combination of a rich culture and a universal theme. The Horn Book California's Children's Book Award

I can only say good things about this book. Both the story and the illustrations are wonderful. I had bought it years ago in Alaska for my youngest child. He is a big kid now *16* ala asked me to order a copy for his first niece. I love that it made enough of an impact on him that he remembered it all of these years later and wanted to gift it to his little niece.

I was introduced to this book while we lived in Alaska and just fell in love with it. This is our favorite family book and a wonderful way to introduce the beautiful Alaska Native traditions. My kids out of the blue will often quote the beginning of the book "Mama, do you love me?" and then I respond appropriately, "Yes, I do dear one" and we go into the next pages. The companion book, Papa Do You Love Me, is just as lovely.

This is my go-to book for babies. I give the board book to three and under; the regular book over three. There's a glossary in the larger book. It's an introduction to First Peoples' culture, and I think it gives children a secure feeling. The reviewers who worry that some parts of the story are vivid and scary can relax. Kids who haven't been overprotected love that stuff. And besides, some kids are afraid of clowns.

My tiny one LOVES this book. We read it 12309182048120981024801929848091284 times a week (mostly because we are stalling before bedtime, but also, it's cute and loving and so affirming for small kiddos whose mommies and daddies are divorcing). Really warm and affectionate and it's easy to change some of the more specific terms to more general words, making it more age-appropriate if your kiddo is smaller.

Such a beautiful story and the artwork is beyond awesome!! I taught school among the Yupik Eskimos and can attest to the wonder of this book. I bought it for a friend who just had a little boy and she said it was a really lovely read. Get the hardcover as you will want to keep it forever....

I received this book yesterday. Very fast shipping on a prime subscription. This book is a board book, i immediately red it to my daughter, she loved it and i loved it, not just the quality of the book but the story is such a beautiful story of a mother who will love her daughter unconditionaly no matter what. Its a great gift but also great to keep it for your self and for your daughter. I highly recommend this book.

I see why this is considered a timeless classic. The message is powerful and the little girl's questions are very sweet. The portrayal of Inuit culture is also very educational and interesting. It can be useful for learning the names of some arctic animals too. The drawings are well done and depict the cultural aspect. I recommend this heart-warming book for small children.

Beautifully illustrated and written. I first found this story in Alaska soon after it was written and have given it as a gift several times to children and prospective parents. It is always a big hit. A true classic that will make you laugh and fill you with love!

This is one of the best and most enjoyable books that I have ever read on entrepreneurship and growing from startup to a successful enterprise. It is the kind of book that can be read time and time again. The beer business is a ruthless and unforgiving industry. You can apply all of the great lessons these guys teach to just about any type of endeavor. Read carefully, slowly, and absorb the lessons. It is like reading "The Art of War". Only better. You get both specific guidelines and solutions to common challenges (industry specific & general business) as well as "across the board" generalizations. I opted for the < $2 electronic access and had already finished reading the entire book before the physical book arrived 2 days later!

I'm about half way through this book and I'm really enjoying it. I'm finding that this book would be a great read for anyone starting a business, not just a brewery. The speak is open entrepreneur language in most cases and not just about a brewery.I like how they go through the struggles of starting a business and then their grade themselves on how they did. They seem to be pretty honest with their grading system and talk about what they could have done differently.I enjoy how they take turns writing sections. You get two slightly different visions of how a person that is risky is willing to start a business as well as someone that is more risk averse views the plan.I highly recommend this for anyone willing to start a brewery. If you are just looking to start a business and enjoy craft beer then you likely would enjoy it too for the strong business talk and not so much brewery talk.

I really enjoyed the style of writing. Steve and Tom each bring unique perspectives to the book. I like how they wove their story in with business practices. Compared to Sam's story dogfish head his story got lost in a lot of discussion on branding and marketing, which was great info but harder to read through. Tom and Steve do a better job weaving the story into an enjoyable, forward moving narrative. This book gives a great look into how the Brooklyn Brewery was built and its interesting offshoot into distribution. It also really emphasizes future long term strategy and did a great job explaining various financing options and there impact on a business.

From an entertainment standpoint this book held my interest. I learned a lot of what not to do in starting a brewery. Their inflated egos cost them lots of money that could have been better spent when starting this business and when I got to the end of the book I don't feel they still understood that concept. If you are looking for information on how to start a successful brewery this isn't it. It is filled with stories and not information with the possible exception those chapters on branding and marketing. Those chapters have lots of good information about how they went about marketing their products.

It's an ok story. You're not going to learn anything about opening a place.

It's a great book that makes you consider a lot about business and brewing. Chances are, if you're considering this book, that you want to start your own nano/micro brewery. This book will give you a no holds barred look at some of the wackiness that happens when you are just trying sell beer. It's a sometimes funny, sometimes serious, look at the history of one brewery through it's ups and downs.

If you are considering getting serious about your brewing or if you just want to know the back story of a great craft brewery, this is a must read! Its is a quick read and it keeps your interest very well. The owner's stories were truly inspiring for me and it has given me the confidence to pursue my own dreams. We'll see what comes of it.

This is a good book for those who like beer but also those considering a career in entrepreneurism. The two founders of Brooklyn Brewery created a company from scratch and did it the hard way- with a lot of labor and love. While marketing and PR were their strong suits, this book is a good anecdote on the challenges in a start-up, even one where you love the product as much as these two did. Unfortunately I found it a little too anecdotal and I tend to find I learn more with business books when there is some data to back up the anecdotes. A fun read though!

#162,044 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

A superbly researched and written account of Mao Zedon's dictatorship, focusing on how he designed The Cultural Revolution to destroy his Communist Party enemies and millions of decent Chinese. His enduring hatred of the educated class did more harm to China than all its external enemies, as teachers, writers, artists, and small businessmen were wiped out or driven to suicide through public torture. A primer in how a dictator manipulates the political and military apparatus to destroy their own people in the name of Marxism-Leninism.

I have read Dikotter's earlier Mao's great Famine. I just finished this. A very well-written and enjoyable (albeit tremendously sad) book.First, I am a fan for some reason of history of mid-20th century political pathologies. So I have read a lot of Stalin books and a lot of Hitler books. If you are not particularly interested in that topic--or more particularly interested in China--then you may find this dry. But if you have any interest at all in the topic, you will find it enjoyable. The story is told in chapters that correspond to phases of the Cultural Revolution. This makes the book a little hard to follow, since (this was one thing I learned) the Cultural Revolution was far from linear. Mao lent support first to one faction then to another. Power ebbed and flowed between factions, yesterday's political oppressors becoming today's political prisoners (and then back again).Random amazing fact: Demand, instilled by a desire to avoid being politically suspect, for copies of Mao's Little Red Book was so high that industrial output had to be redirected; soap production fell by 15% nationally to allow for production of the book. For the general reader (like me) the book is well written and clear enough to be enjoyable. From the footnotes, it appears the Dikotter has been in the archives a lot. Nealy all the notes refer to original sources.Good book.

How much suffering can one people bear?Read The Cultural Revolution: A People's History, 1962—1976 by Frank Dikötter and you will have your answer. The history of China can be one of many lows; wars, famines, poor leadership, imperial occupation and exploitation. Yet The Cultural Revolution was particularly cruel. Mao simply enacted this ‘movement’ as an exercise in raw power. He wanted to destroy his enemies, both real and perceived, to sow chaos, to throw his people into a pool of confusion, dislocation and death simply because he could.Reading this book helps in understanding some of the absurdities and tragedies at the heart of Chinese history. The Chinese are a dynamic people and with vibrant culture. Yet their natural genius has been poorly harnessed for so long. This book is simply an extreme example of this at work. How can a people who experienced The Cultural Revolution not be deeply scared?

There is an inherent fallacy in the five-star grading system. "I love it" does not even vaguely describe my feelings after reading this book. "I dread it, and yet compulsively read it" describes it much better, because Dikotter's book is like watching Middle Ages hanging cum quartering cum disembowling live. In a reserved academic style, backed by a mountain of evidence, the author almost dispassionately describes the starving, torturing, killing, maiming, and de-humanizing of the innumerable number of people in the most populous country in the world. It is hard to decide what is more frightening - the personal stories brought into the book as a way of illustrating what happened, or the unimaginable scale of this worst crime ever throughout all ages. The communist party machinery led by Mao Zedung destroyed the lives of hundreds of millions of people of at least two generations, killing or starving more than 50,000,000 citizens. Gingis Han, the Vikings, Ivan the Terrible, Napoleon, Keiser Willhelm, even Stalin, Hitler, and Kim Il Sung pale into puny little tyrants by comparison. It is true that the bulk of the starved victims were exterminated in the great Mao famine following the Great Leap Forward in the fifties and predated the Cultural Revolution. Yet the mass starvation may have been less cruel than the utter inhuman modelling and remodelling of 800,000,000 during the Cultural Revolution, The Cultural Revolution Counter-Revolution, and the revival of the Cultural Revolution. Although Cultural Revolution may have resulted an death of "only" millions, the souls of hundreds of millions were systematically murdered. Those that survived had to undergo hunger, persecution, rape, disease, and continuous haranguing by the party cadres. In one chapter, cannibalism of the black-elements is reported, with the party leaders getting the best parts, i.e. hearts and livers. Mr. Dikotter puts a mirror in which our own tolerance of this horror is gruesomely reflected. We protest apartheid, we demonstrate against racism, we boykott Israel, we accuse the Hutus of genocide, yet the real or imaginary crimes of these alleged pepetrators are as a grain of sand against the Sahara of the Chinese Communist Party. And remeber, nobody was brought to justice. The West embraced Mao's and post-Mao's China and Apple churns out its i-phones in a country where no reckoning and spiritual purification was ever allowed, and the same monsters still rule. "Oh, the horror of it" (Joseph conrad, Heart of Darkness)

Another nice entry by Dikötter into Chinese history. He covers the era in depth, with all of the death, denunciations, and economic calmity that happened in this time period (along with some of the ingenuity and entrepreneurship of the times, as well). I found the entry on the Great Leap Forward to be a more fascinating read, but this book is still eye-opening. You certainly get the sense of the great respect Dikötter (and the reader also gets) has for the Chinese people in getting though the Cultural Revolution.
