A Lucky Child: A Memoir of Surviving Auschwitz as a Young Boy, by Thomas Buergenthal

From Publishers Weekly

Not many children who entered Auschwitz lived to tell the tale. The American judge at the International Court of Justice in the Hague, Czechoslovakia-born Buergenthal, is one of the few. A 10-year-old inmate in August 1944 at Birkenau, Buergenthal was one of the death camp's youngest prisoners. He miraculously survived, thanks, among others, to a friendly kapo who made him an errand boy. Buergenthal's authentic, moving tale reveals that his lifelong commitment to human rights sprang from the ashes of Auschwitz. 16 b&w photos, 1 map. You think you’ve heard it all: the roundups, deportations, transports, selections, hard labor, death camps (“That was the last time I saw my father”), crematoriums, and the rare miracle of survival. But this one is different. The clear, nonhectoring prose makes Buergenthal’s personal story––and the enduring ethical questions it prompts––the stuff of a fast, gripping read. Five years old in Czechoslovakia at the start of World War II, Buergenthal remembers being crowded into the ghetto and then, in 1944, feeling “lucky” to escape the gas chambers and get into Auschwitz, where he witnessed daily hangings and beatings, but with the help of a few adults, managed to survive. In a postwar orphanage, he learned to read and write but never received any mail, until in a heartrending climax, his mother finds him. In 1952, he immigrated to the U.S., and now, as human-rights lawyer, professor, and international judge, his childhood’s moral issues are rooted in his daily life, his tattooed number a reminder not so much of the past as of his obligation, as witness and survivor, to fight bigotry today. --Hazel Rochman

I think it is my duty, not so much as a German (born to non-Nazis in 1939) but as a human being, to keep reading Holocaust memoirs. I cannot read too many in a row, but I read several every year.Yes, Thomas Buergenthal was “A Lucky Child”; otherwise, he would not have lived to write this memoir. But as Ruth Klueger points out in her philosophical Holocaust memoir “Still Alive: A Holocaust Girlhood Remembered”, the luck of the Holocaust survivors does not diminish the dimension of the crime, and the survivors cannot be used as “credits” to be subtracted from the great “debit”.Thomas Buergenthal’s story lets you shudder at how much repeated miraculous luck was necessary for his survival. Religious people will probably replace the term “luck” with other terms. Buergenthal, however, is not religious and attributes his survival to luck. All Holocaust memoirs (i.e., those that stick to the truth and don’t mix facts with fiction) are worthwhile reading, but one cannot possibly read them all. So I try to find those memoirs that are well written and provide some more insights than others. “A Lucky Child” is certainly one of them. Each Holocaust survivor has his or her own story, the story of an individual experience. And while the dreadful living- and dying conditions in concentration camps and on death marches in all of these memoirs are quite alike, the personal experiences differ. What also differs is how the survivors and those in their surroundings deal with their ordeals. What makes this book especially interesting is that the memoir continues after the war and tells about the author’s adult life. Thomas Buergenthal was able to overcome his, quite understandable, initial hate for Germans. He became a human rights activist and a lawyer specialized on international law, dealing with prosecuting war crimes and human rights violations.I strongly recommend the reading of this book. It should, along with some other Holocaust memoirs, be mandatory reading in schools all over the world.Other highly recommendable Holocaust memoirs are:Elie Wiesel’s “Night”Primo Levi’s “Survival in Auschwitz” (orig. title: “If This is a Man”) and its sequel “The Reawakening”—See my review at: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...Ruth Klueger’s “Still Alive: A Girlhood Remembered”See my review at: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...Peter Kubicek’s “Memories of Evil”See my review at: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...andTema Merback’s “In the Face of Evil”, based on her mother’s Holocaust survivalSee my review at: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...One should also not miss “The Complete Maus”, by Art Spiegelman

This is the first book about the Holocaust that I have read.It will evoke more emotions than you can deal with at times. As a mother my heart turned to stone against the people that wouldcause harm to a child..Just as quickly I wanted to reach through time and snatch Thomas awayand protect him.It shook me to the very foundation I was planted on.Thank you Thomas for the courage it took for you to relive the horrors of the Holocaust.I am in awe of you and all the survivors. We are so lucky to live in America and we take for granted all the freedoms that we have here.I wish everyone would read this book.

The first 2/3 of this book was interesting, with a different take than most holocaust books I have read. It was here that the book should have ended, and gotten 4 stars from me. The last third of the book was rambling opinions on the state of the world, then a re-hash of the story itself.

I've read many books on this subject but not one like this. Mr. Buergenthal's tone is different from the beginning. He relates his experiences in such a matter of fact way that at times he seems to have distanced himself completely from the events. It's almost told as if he's telling someone else's story. In spite of this, the story is well written.

A great memoir by Thomas Buergenthal. Very easy to read and entertaining. I wanted to keep reading and not put the book down in order to find out what would happen next. The memoir definitely met my expectations (and was a bit eerie at times since I recently visited Sachsenhausen). Buergenthal's journey is an inspirational real life story about the human spirit and its strengths in difficult times, family ties, forgiveness, and beating the odds trying to make a difference in the world. Truly an example to follow. No matter what barriers are set before someone, Buergenthal demonstrates that anything can be overcome with determination, hard work, and a little bit of luck.

First let me share my disappointment that IS and I'M publishers spurned this book because Auschwitz no longer "sold". I encourage the reading this memoir and reflection of this survivor. I especially urge my Norwegian cousins, who must have enjoyed Nansen's Tommy to do so. Survival stories should always sell even when they are not as well written as this.

Such an amazing and powerful story! I am always humbled by the challenges so many faced at this time in our world's history. I am also empowered by their determination, hope, and sometimes great fortune in withstanding those challenges. This is story well-worth reading.

GREAT BOOK! Well written and very detailed without being oppressive with details. It was an “easy read” and quick to get through. Very captivating story and one of true triumph of a dark time in history. This was my vacation “beach read” and I would definitely recommend to anyone interested in stories of the holocaust and it’s surviors.

Review

"They thought they could frighten Judyth Vary Baker into silence. And for decades they succeeded. But it’s too late to shut her up now. She’s already blown the whistle! And she did it for her friend Lee Oswald. Judyth’s story is a dark odyssey of disease, murder and betrayal, but it is one laced with innocence, hope and love."  —Edward T. I discovered this book from reading Edward Haslam book Dr. Mary's Monkey. I have interest in these event because all this is taking place in New Orleans and I am born, raised and still reside in south Louisiana. On a personal level, when I learned in school about the JFK assassination or watched documentaries on it, I would look at the pictures of Oswald and think "He doesn't look like a monster. Actually he looks kind." Over the past several years, more evidence and conspiracies have come out to suggest or prove to some that Oswald was innocent and a patsy. We meet Judyth. A bright, young and talented woman destined for science stardom. (We even have made progress in laboratories thanks to her). She takes us on a journey, of ultimately a few months. Having become best friends and eventually lovers, Judyth displays a side of Lee that I hope is true. Soft, caring, intelligent, and innocent. The only thing I question is literally that the dates (which are everyday) and the events and conversations that happened. Did she actually keep a diary? I don't know. However I don't let that distract me from the book. I personally do believe her story. I would love to see a movie made from her story.Though the book is a bit long (almost 600 pages) It gives a detailed look into the point she is trying to prove: Who is involved in the cancer epidemic and who did not kill JFK. I highly recommend to read Dr. Mary's Monkey in companion.

This lady is an extraordinary person. Having intuitively known that Lee Harvey Oswald was an innocent man by virtue of the evidence which does not, by the way, place him on the sixth floor of the TSBD where the three shots were allegedly fired. Instead, as Jim Garrison said in "The Men Who Killed Kennedy" that Oswald "was a genuine hero". In Judyth's book, we get the picture of a very thoughtful, intelligent and courageous young man who was led into thinking he was defending his country. My faith in Lee Harvey Oswald tripled after reading this book and my meager faith in the government has altogether disappeared. I'm certain it will do the same for any other intrepid reader willing to dare!

I very much like this book, it was courageous to write for the author, and it was well documented! I would buy it again, and was happy with my purchase. Ms. Baker brings into the story of the JFK assassination a detailed and personal account of her experience with Lee Harvey Oswald and an interesting look at her experiences in New Orleans in her younger years. I very much enjoyed reading this book and recommend it to other readers. I have studied the JFK Assassination for years, and this filled in some details l did not have before and I appreciate the author's efforts. Backed up by the author of Mary's Monkey, whom I trust, is the efforts that Ms. Baker courageously gave and wrote. You will not be disappointed in the purchase of this book. Thank you.

This book will convince the reader that Lee Harvey Oswald was a patsy for JFK's murder.I kept wondering how this info did not come out years ago. I still wondered until I got near the book's end. Then it made sense. The author, Judyth Vary Baker, has included documents and pictures to add authenticity to this true story.I would like to believe that most reasonable people do not believe that a lone gunman murdered President John Kennedy.I started studying the JFK murder in 1975. There are many good books out there, but this is the book that convince skeptics there is a lot more going on than the general public knows. Please read this powerful book - you won't get to know who pulled the trigger, but you will get to know who did not.

This book is best read in conjunction with DR. MARY''S MONKEY by Haslam. This way the picture of the conspiracy, involving the JFK assassination and other world events of the time, is seen more fully. I consider these 2 books to be the best historical documents on the subject, and both of them are easy to read. Me & Lee is especially hard to put down

Reading this, I got the feeling that Lee Oswald was an entirely different person than we've been told for decades. Although I could see how Judyth’s view of him could be rose-colored, looking through the eyes of love as well as her grief, I believe that the side of him portrayed in her story is much more real than the one portrayed by those who needed him to look like a loser. I've read numerous books about the many different people involved in JFK's murder, but this is unlike any of the others I've read. This is as much of an biography of Lee Oswald as I've ever seen - and right up until the night of November 21, 1963! For the first time we see HIS side of the story as told by Judyth Vary Baker. I'm very, very glad I read this! Thank you, Judyth for sharing your story, a story that no one else could have shared. Just an afterthought - In my opinion of the film footage where they are asking Oswald if he killed the president and he responds with a no answer, then they tell him, "You have been charged with killing the president", his visual response is not one of surprise, but instead, one of silent, angry acceptance of what had been done to him.

I consider myself to be a "student" of the Holy Spirit. I have read a number of Bible commentaries on the Spirit, including Billy Graham's book. I have head Francis Chan speak on a number of occasions, and I have read at least one of his other books, but I was "late to this party," and I greatly regret that. I VERY MUCH enjoyed reading Forgotten God. If you would like to be encouraged -- and convicted -- by a solid biblical analysis of the Holy Spirit, seek no more!

This book is one of those books that will affect you. Deeply. If you wish your church had more passion, more love for people who attend (even once), look like the Acts 2 church; did you ever wonder why it feels like something is missing? Maybe it's because some ONE is missing. If you long to read a book that will show you how to get more peace, joy, love, self control and the other fruit of the spirit, and the Bible is just not speaking to you as you know it could be---this book might just be the catalyst you need to show you how to live the life God wants you to experience. If that scares you a bit, then you really do need to absorb what Francis Chan is teaching in this heart-filled message.

Powerful book! It will step on most folks toes, it did mine but I'm getting over it. My problem, not God's. I bought both Forgotten God: Reversing Our Tragic Neglect of the Holy Spirit and Crazy Love. I am wading through both of them. I'm wading because I'm still on the shallow end of a really deep subject. This is not the place for a testimony so I won't go there. If you let it, the book will touch your life deeply all the way to your soul -- that's what counts -- that's really all that counts! For that reason I give it a five star rating.

You And Me Forever by Francis and Lisa Chan is the best kind of bait-and-switch. It looks like a marriage book, and it sounds like a marriage book, but it’s not REALLY a book on marriage. It’s really a book about having the eternal view of every aspect of life, including marriage and parenting. It’s a book about seeking first the Kingdom of God and everything else, including a healthy marriage, flowing from that. And it’s about seeing everything you have, including your marriage, as something to be used for the mission of God in this world.I estimate only about 25% of this book directly addresses marriage and marriage issues. I’m reluctant to let that cat out of the bag, because the best-case scenario would be someone beginning this book with their guard down, expecting some “tried-and-true marriage tips,” and getting creamed unawares by the Chans’ amazing vision of living a life focused on God and His mission. This book rocked me like none I’ve read in a long time. It’s unquestionably the best book I’ve read all year, and the best marriage book I’ve ever read—if it indeed qualifies as a marriage book. This book is a manifesto of daily discipleship, in light of eternity. It was simultaneously water for my parched soul, and painful, jolting stab of conviction to my heart. This is a book for married people, single people, people with kids, and people without them. The American church desperately needs the message of this book.Francis and Lisa Chan do an excellent job of narrating the book. At first I found the narration a little dry. However, as the book goes on, both of them speak with deep conviction and seriousness, practically pleading with the listener to repent of their small view of God and His mission. It’s prophetic stuff, and I’m so glad they narrated it themselves.Highly, highly recommended. Please Note: This audiobook was gifted as a part of the Christianaudio Reviewers Program in exchange for my unbiased review of this work. The reading of the book, supported by its narration by Pastor Francis Chan , convicts of far short is the true experience of the Presence of the Holy Spirit. For instance praying Luke 11:13 daily ...took on a different in the darkness of my own spirit not merely convicting but the rReading with his own voice !!! Am looking forward to as spiritual change! An adventure with the Holy Spirit ! Thank you Pastor Chan!

Ok...amazing! I wish I had read this marriage book about 9 years and 20 marriage books ago! This book changed the way I viewed EVERYTHING. I saw some reviewers mention they read Crazy Love by Francis Chan first which is what drew them to this, so I'm doing the opposite. I loved this one SO much I am going to read Crazy Love next! I've handed my copy off to a friend and I've recommended to many others. Everyone who has read it has told me they've been spreading the word. It was eye-opening for me as a wife and mother, to realize that living a Christian life is MUCH much more than having a happy family. My kids are still toddlers and I'm SO thankful for having read this book now so that we can truly center our marriage and family around Christ and show our children that living the authentic Christian life is more than just trying to be a perfect family. The book dives into much more, but that parenting chapter towards the end really hit me hard! (In a good way!!).I can't say enough for how genuinely inspirational this whole book was! It's one I couldn't put down and I can't wait to get it back so I can read it again.

This is an amazing book that calls followers of Jesus to remember that their marriage is in the context of God's plan for building His kingdom. It is practical and radical in that it doesn't focus on marriage in an effort to make marriage good. Instead it points us to the life God calls us to as married people. This dramatic distinction makes all the difference. It also elevates marriage to what God has in mind.I have a lot of refocusing to do in my marriage that will bring God glory. Ultimately marriage, including my own, is not about us. It is a picture of God's desire for His church.
