Considering that McCraw became known to most of us after writing a "lawyer letter" to Trump's attorneys that went viral, it's tempting to chalk this up as another anti-Trump screed that can be easily ignored by his supporters and trumpeted (if not read) by his detractors. That would be a mistake. What McCraw has written instead is an informative, enlightening, nuanced, and entertaining description of the role of the First Amendment in our government and culture. As an attorney, McCraw recognizes the difference between legal writing and narrative writing, and he pokes fun at himself and the legal profession in making this point while ensuring that his narrative is clear, direct, and easy to read. His focus is on telling stories that highlight his points, and given his work with the NYT there are lots of stories to share. He reviews not only many of the challenges with Trump's attacks on the press, but also the role and importance of "leakers," his frustration with Obama's crackdown on these leakers (in this sense, Obama comes across almost as poorly as Trump), the story behind the Harvey Weinstein reporting, kidnappings in foreign countries, challenges with the Freedom of Information Act, and more. Concepts that are likely dry and tedious in law school are brought to life in real-world situations where the First Amendment matters, sometimes to the point of literal life and death. At the book's heart, as McCraw affirms, is a passion for the First Amendment and the need for it to exist in a democracy. Throughout the book, the real heroes are the journalists who risk their lives in standing up to authoritarian governments and placing themselves in war zones to report their stories. These individuals demonstrate that the First Amendment is worth dying for.McCraw closes the book by noting that it's not enough to support the First Amendment, but that we must all search for the truth so we can make informed decisions. The founding fathers developed their constitutional system through the belief that it would succeed only if citizens could distinguish truth from lies. This is why Trump's attacks on "fake news" and calling the media "the enemy of the people" is particularly alarming. As McCraw states, "The First Amendment story is, in the end, now about law but about hearts and minds. It doesn't really matter how much freedom journalists have if no one believes them. A discredited press plays no role in shaping democracy and holding power accountable." This is a role the Founding Fathers recognized as imperative, and we should as well. McCraw shows us why.

it would be nice if the Times could deign to say Trump lies every damned day.No matter how fast you are you cannot outrun the truth Walter ObererTrump's word is worthless. Would be nice if times said thatThe news is real; Trump is the fake

David McGraw, the lawyer for the New York Times, has written an important book about a newspaper’s right to report the truth at a time that Trump rants about “fake news” and “ the failing New York Times.” It’s a good complement to “Breaking News: The Remaking of Journalism and Why It Matters” by Alan Rusbridger, former editor of the Guardian. Like so many others, I am a life long reader of the New York Times and it has become especially important to me during the Trump presidency for its news coverage and opinion columns. It provides me with a sense of community at this time of great polarization in our country.

David McCraw has worked at the New York Times (NYT) since 2002. With a background in journalism, he's also a lawyer employed as Deputy General Counsel of the New York Times.McCraw recalls lawsuits faced by the NYT since his employment, but the focus is on the last two years under the Trump administration. This book is not to slam Trump. McCraw is a self-described "raving Moderate." He slams Democrats as well. He describes Hillary Clinton as someone who "had hostility to openness" (89) and Barack Obama's administration as one that was "more aggressive than any prior administration in prosecuting government workers accused of unauthorized disclosures" (111), perhaps because of the 2013 Edward Snowden scandal. What McCraw does describe are the many threatened lawsuits from Trump since his presidency, almost all of them accusing the NYT of libel when it's nothing more than Trump not liking the criticisms in the articles. Libel must be proven as made in malice and be untrue facts, not opinions. What Trump doesn't like about him in the media, he immediately labels as "fake news." McCraw claims the NYT may make mistakes in its reporting, and then publish an apology, but it will not intentionally publish false stories and disinformation.McCraw writes well and I find the narrative flows easily. Perhaps McCraw wrote this book (which, I'm sure, Trump will not like and sue him for libel, again) to justify why the NYT does not write positively of Trump. Compared to Bush43 and Obama before him, no other 21st century American president has disparaged the press as much s Trump has, and often because he doesn't like anything bad or negative published about him. He cites too many incidents in this book, including the repeated tactic of using secret service employees to force certain journalists out of press briefings, and Trump rallying his supporters to attack reporters as enemy of the people. The Trump administrations thrives on secrecy, and the more the government withholds, the more journalists and the public will want to pry out the truth to the public.McCraw's exacerbated tone is evident in Chapter 6, "Us vs Us" and continues in subsequent chapters as the proliferation of fakes news is making its way around social media and people don't always know that the stories they are reading are fake. His exacerbation often turns to dry sarcasm, and he cites Facebook's lax search for the truth as part of the problem. The book is timely, as Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has recently mentioned reconsidering the 1964 Supreme Court NYT vs Sullivan decision, in which a defendant must prove malice when suing for defamation. If this decision is overturned, Trump and his administration could sue more easily and win. This is something to ponder.

Must read. It reminds us of how easily we can lose our free press.

Great book. The world needed high quality gay romance novels.

So this book just ends. There is no warning, it just stops mid-story so this really shouldn't be read expecting a resolution, or a stand-alone. This is definitely intended to be only the first book in a series. With that in mind, I thought that this world is interesting. I was a bit confused about how Lucian's thoughts seemed to indicate that he was so old due to his hybrid nature, and yet his uncle and cousin are older and they aren't hybrids. Both Lucian and Gabriel were hot and their claiming was incredibly violent, but it fit with both characters.I am excited to see where this will go.

Really loved this book. Esquivel does a great job of dropping us straight into a story and catching our attention right away. I loved that the main character has a lot of different things going on. Demon, Werewolf, Vampire's Property. Then he finds his mate. This book was a fast and fun read. I can't wait to read the next installment. I was given an advance copy of this book and I choose to leave a review!

Story starts off with a bang, grabs you and never lets you go. Read the whole thing in one sitting as it was fast paced gritty, dark, and sexy all in one. I kind of wish that is wasn't so short but this is not the first time Iv'e read an author that publishes this way, you know the short hot snippets that keep you coming back for more. The characters are brutal in both their violent natures and their sexuality. The world building includes a veritable cornucopia of paranormals, and their is definitely an underlying mythology that is being developed by the author. If you are looking for a fun, hot little read with yummy MC's then this is the book for you. I cannot wait for the next installment.

It's a freaking CLIFFHANGER!!! I feel manipulated into buying the others that will come. I bet the author wrote the whole story, then split it up to make money. Even if it was a work of art (it was okay), I wouldn't read any more

The story just ended. Total cliffhanger without any warning. This kind of dark book needs some happy at the end of the pin is just not worth it. & there wasn't any ending at all let alone a happy one.

This was a great read and leaves you wanting more. Ready for the next book to continue the story of the two lovers.

This book is a classic so there is really nothing I can say that others have not already said, and better. It is science fiction that addresses the social consequences of contact between people from different planets rather than fixating on technology and the things that can go wrong. It is a great story with wonderful characters and descriptions of imagined worlds. It addresses the issues of sex and gender by imagining how a person from a world with two biological sexes would interact in a world where everyone is both sexes at once. The issue is not desire and the sex act, but rather how our social perceptions, interactions and expectations are shaped in rather profound ways by our ideas about gender. This is not the main point of the book but rather part of the rich social and philosophical landscape where the action takes place. I had been meaning to read this for years and am now a devoted Le Guin fan. I really think this might have made it into my top 20 favorite books.

Ursula K Le Guin. I had heard the name many times growing up. It was always spoken with respect by people who held my respect. And yet, for all of that I had not read her work until now. I wonder how different my life would have been if I had read her work sooner. I'll never know. This book is, at its simplest and least descriptive, a thought experiment. What if there were a world where gender as we know it did not exist. But that is not the half of it. It is not even close. This book examines how nationalism can be wonderful and yet poisonous. It compares the societies of differing nation-states. It looks at humanity's role in nature. It stares unflinchingly at love in various forms and in the end, the reader has gone through a journey nearly as transformative as the one taken by our protagonist, Genly Ai.My only true complaint stems from the idea that Genly's gender biases are so strong that he consistently labels the Gethenians as he despite having been briefed of their genderless status before beginning the assignment.Still ignoring the pronoun confusion, this was an amazing book. It is thoughtful and thought provoking. It is wise and wonderful. And though a world as cold as Winter sounds like my own personal hell, I will revisit the characters again with pleasure.

This book changed my thinking about gender. The planet natives are normally gender neutral (one can't say androgynous as they are neither male nor female, rather than both) until they enter kemmer, a sort of heat, when they become randomly male or female. After kemmer they go back to the neutral state, unless pregnant. So one person can be the mother or two and the father of three. This book was published in 1969, and LBGTQ people may find some of the ideas dated, but it remains a profound exploration of what happens when the basic traits by which one is defined in one's own society don't apply in another culture. I was surprised when I re-read "The Left Hand of Darkness" to realize it could apply to any trait - race, religion, even political affiliation.Highly recommended.

This book started out quite slow. I did not know if I would be able to finish it. All I can tell you is, hang in there, learn the weird names, and it will be worth it. In the story, she tells something not quite relatable in words alone. One of my new favorite authors.

On Gethen, human envoy Genly Ai has been sent to convince the planet’s leaders to join the Ekumen, a loose confederation of planets who do not rule one another, but who cooperate in matters of interest to all Ekumen members. Barriers to Ai’s success include Gethenian pride, antipathy and discord between that world’s rival nation-states, and Ai’s lack of understanding in a global culture fueled by the ambisexual nature of Gethenians. The only native who believes the Ekumen can save Gethen is Estraven, a native whom Ai regards with suspicion. But when politics casts Estraven in a criminal light, Ai is dragged into a fierce powerplay and finds himself imprisoned, beaten, and left for dead. Only by abandoning his prejudice—and learning to trust the Otherness of his savior—can he survive his ordeal. The Left Hand of Darkness was originally published in 1969 and is the title that established Le Guin as a science fiction writer. It’s incredibly intricate, an excellent example of worldbuilding. Politics and governance are well-represented, if convoluted, which makes it all the more believable. The climate on Gethen is wintry; inhabitants and their lifestyles reflect this in every detail. But what captivated me most was the nature of Gethenian sexuality. On Gethen, gender is irrelevant. Though Ai uses predominantly masculine pronouns throughout the narrative, native humanoids on Gethen are not born male or female. They are neither—until they enter “kemmer,” a regular period of increased hormonal activity in which Gethenians are driven to find a partner who is also in kemmer, for sex and procreation. Hormone levels determine which partner becomes the inseminator and which becomes the recipient. If the recipient becomes pregnant, they remain “female” throughout the gestation period, after which they return to normal. This cycle drives the entire culture, coloring every aspect of Gethenian society.Though this isn’t the only detail to recommend the book, it’s definitely key to the story. At the time it was written, Gethenian sexuality drew a lot of attention among readers and reviewers; but it’s still relevant today. While some have criticized Le Guin for homophobia, and while Le Guin later expressed regret that she’d portrayed Gethenian norms as heterosexual, the fact remains that the story explores the nature of gender in our own society, as well as on Gethen. For my own part, I found the development of friendship and love between characters so widely diverse much more meaningful than when or how or even whether copulation occurred. In any event, The Left Hand of Darkness is a classic in science fiction literature, a multi-layered story that explores not only cultural divides but sociological ones as well as deep, philosophical quandaries, a must-read for all sci-fi fans. Groundbreaking and evocative, I found myself rooting for both Ai and Estraven, and was sorry to turn the last page. Only one of multiple novels set in the Hainish series, LHoD can be read as a standalone tale. One caveat: Le Guin runs heavy on detail and subtlety. It isn’t exactly an easy read. If that bothers you, dear reader, push through. I promise the payoff is worth it.

"Sci-fi writers have a duty to turn away from the 'dystopian' and encourage complex thought and higher consciousnesses."This book sums that up quite eloquently. It explores gender in a unique and enlightening way. How we, as humans, perceive gender and how it effects our lives and ways of thinking. It explores the bonds of friendship, love, politics, and war all without the confines of gender. A fascinating read through the eyes of the "Envoy" as he struggles to survive in a toiling political climate on an alien world.Well worth the read!

I write this review with hopes it will help another IT enthusiast like myself.I passed my Network+ Exam yesterday (August 3rd) on my first try. I have zero networking experience, and my only prior knowledge of networking was the introduction to networking class I took while working on my Bachelors in Information Technology.I gave myself one month from receiving this book until I was in the Exam room. I did just that and felt that this book was beneficial. For those of you that have little to no knowledge of networking, this book will help give you an excellent overview of networking. Professor Meyers has a unique method of piecing everything together as you progress throughout the book.Depending on your learning style, I would suggest other material on top of this book when taking the exam. It was difficult, and I don't believe I would have passed just by reading this book alone. The book provided a great foundation of general knowledge on each key objective. However, I used two other study materials to be safe.Professor Messer's videos were beneficial, as well as printing off his PDF notes. His videos are linear with the learning objectives. Which was great to follow up with after cramming this study guide; additionally I found Certmaster was well worth the price. About 800 questions overall and had a quick learning method of re-quizzing you on areas you struggled on.My study methodology:Cram Network+ 007 study guide in two weeks (About 55 pages a day)One week of binging Professor Messer's videos (12 Hours total playing time)One week of CertMaster, and any other areas I felt that I need additional research.I hope this helps those of you that are nervous about the exam like I was.

Just purchased. I don't understand what the drama is about in the other ratings. I bought this book knowing it deliberately catered to the CompTIA curriculum rather than Cisco. I also don't understand the complaints regarding the author's expertise or writing style. I am finding the book to be just fine for preparing me for this exam and acting as a good supplement to my Security+ study material. If I find anything remarkably disagreeable about this book that causes my opinion to change, I'll update this review but it seems great. I got the product I paid for, and this is an all-in-one focus book on Network+. Maybe the negative reviewers were looking for something more in depth than what this book has to offer, I'm not sure. But for my skill level, at this time, this is what I need.edit: It looks like the negative reviews for this item were spam and have since, fortunately, been removed. This book really is worth while to buy and learn from. My review remains at 5 stars.

Mike's books are typically very good. The A+ book was enough for me to pass my exam. This book, however, is missing a lot. Like most of his books, I'd wager close to 100 pages or so could be removed with irrelevant information involving obsolete terms and technologies that no longer exist and haven't for decades.I purchased the CompTIA Certmaster bundle because it wasn't much more expensive than just the exam voucher and it helped a lot with A+. Well almost immediately upon answering CompTIA's actual questions I started noticing that a lot of what they were looking for was nowhere to be found in the nearly 800 pages of a book meant to help you pass the exam. CompTIA's definition of acronyms are different than his (and their definitions are what matters if you want to pass), entire concepts are not even touched on, information about some standards not in here, info about a few specific port numbers are not quite accurate, and a lot more. While this book is a very good prep tool and reference guide for future use, just be wary that you will need to find alternative literature to fill in the gaps. When I go for other certifications I believe I will most likely look for alternatives to Mr. Meyers' books.

I had no extensive knowledge of IT just a particular interest. I recently switch my degree from Healthcare IT to just IT in general. After having read this book Mike provides great examples and easy to remember correlations with all the topics and concepts Comptia is looking for. I passed on my first attempt of the test.

I ordered this 4 weeks before my scheduled exam date. Probably should have gave myself more time. My plan was to read the book, then hit up some practice tests. I read just over half the book in the 3 weeks I had it. I tested having only taken a few practice tests and did only so so on them. I passed, but just barely and need to strengthen my skills and knowledge in a few areas. Even if you work in IT, give yourself more time than I did to prepare for this exam.

the book was great I passed the test with no problems and I am now network+ certified

This book is very well written, besides very detailed and informative, the author injects humor, easy to understand analogies, and logically pulls together all the exam objectives, in a linear fashion. Since I had read the official CompTIA Network+ book and began to feel overwhelmed and discouraged. I hopped on Amazon and researched other Network+ books and Mike Myers book just struck me as an authority on the topic. Now halfway through I can whole heartedly say that I am mesmerized by the author. He technically details each aspect in layman’s terms making it an easy read and it gets me excited that I may have a real opportunity to pass this exam in style. I had put off on buying more books because I wanted to be sure I needed them. Right now I don’t believe I do. I really enjoy his writing style and he points out, in several places, where the test makers themselves have some of the terminology wrong and also lets you know what will likely be on exam and what will not. I could go on and on but I will end it here and let you take my word for it. Excellent book, and excellent perspective. Well done! Bravo!

I like the pictures and how the story of Jesus is told in this book. Before ordering, I would have liked to take a look inside the book, but that feature wasn't available. I also tried to find out if this book could be ordered as a "board" book for toddlers. I ordered it based upon Little Golden Book's reputation. Here's a description of what's inside the book: The story starts with baby Jesus born in a stable with parents, Mary and Joseph. Later, when Jesus is 12, he travels with his parents to Jerusalem for the feast of Passover, and He is thrilled to go to the temple. Jesus knows His life work will be for His Father in heaven. John baptizes Jesus, Jesus goes into the desert and when he comes back, He teaches the people to obey God's words. Miracles include feeding the multitude after Jesus blesses a boy's lunch, and stopping the terrible storm when He and the disciples were in a boat on a lake. The story continues with His crucifixion, and it is handled in a gentle way appropriate for children. Plus, it allows parents and grandparents to add more details if the little one is mature enough to understand. (In my family, one child had more questions, but her sibling wasn't ready for more information even though their biological years were the same when they first heard the story.) This book has hard covers with paper pages, so I think I will save it until my grandkids are kindergarten age and no longer chew/teethe their books, LOL!

Delivered on time. Cute book for children, though I bought it for an adult friend whose English is limited to understand who Jesus is.

We like a lot of the Little Golden Book stories. This one is about Jesus. It covers His birth, death, resurrection, and a few other moments of his life. The book takes some creative license and this is not one of my favorite children's books about Christ because of that. However, the fact that it covers the important aspect of Jesus's life, death, resurrection and ascension are what caused me to give it 5 stars. It is absolutely age appropriate for even the youngest. We read it to our kids and they are 3 months, 1 year, and 2 years old. While it highlights moments in time during Jesus's life that are important to us as Christians, it adds things and leaves out a few important points (most notably that Jesus is the product of the Holy Spirit having impregnated Mary, who was a virgin when she gave birth). Supplementing stories like this with Bible teaching is always necessary for kids to get the bigger picture of who Jesus was as the Son of God. Good supplemental scriptures to follow up this book with would be Matthew 1:18, Colossians 2:9 and 1st Timothy 3:16, which highlight the divine nature of Jesus. The moments of Jesus's life highlighted in this book are His birth in Bethlehem; visit to the temple as a young boy; baptism by John (it says "God sent a dove from heaven," rather than identifying "The Holy Spirit in the form of a dove"); Jesus's temptation in the desert (However, it excludes the temptation part. It says he went there and prayed for God to show him how to live his life.); generalized references to Jesus's ministry and miracles, specifically calling out healing, feeding 5,000, and stopping the storm; parables, such as "the lilies" are stated in brief; betrayal by Judas; taken by soldiers; delivered up to Pontius Pilate; crucifixion and prayer for forgiveness of the people; empty tomb and resurrection three days after HIs crucifixion; appearance to the disciples prior to ascension into Heaven, along with the command to his followers to teach people His words; promise that He'll always be with his followers "...until the end of the world."It doesn't cover salvation, but it give kids a good grounding for understanding who Jesus was.

I liked this story a lot. It was a good pharaphrased version of Jesus's life. I purchased it as part of an Easter gift for my toddlers. I had a hard time finding a good story book to desrcibe Jesus's death and ressurection and this did a pretty good job doing so!

A little dry for a preschooler. Cute pictures but the words were not as child friendly or developmentally appropriate as I would have hoped. Quickly bored my son. Was hoping for better.

Love this little book for nighttime story for my grand children! Provides education about Jesus! Great book and great price!

I bought this for my two year old daughter and she loves this book. I let her pick one book at night for me to read to her before she falls asleep. As she picks this book out, she says "Jesus" book... She really enjoys this book and loves the colorful pictures shown as I read to her. This is a good book to introduce who Jesus is and what He has done for us: Birth, Teacher, Death and Resurrection!

I read this to our grandchildren. It's a simple introduction to who Jesus is and starts conversations with little ones based on their questions and observations.
