Jennifer Shannon has written a friendly but informative book in a voice nicely suited to teens. I chose this for my 14 year old to help her develop better study habits and I've included her review as well. The book breaks down procrasinators into four key categories: The perfectionist, the warrior, the pleaser, and the rebel. Each of these personalities put off tasks for reasons specific to their type: the perfectionist is afraid that what they finish will not be judged well, the warrior doesn't do things unless motivated, the pleaser puts off anything that might make an unpleasant situation with people, and the rebel refuses to do things that are mundane or deemed as 'the same as everyone else.'Once the types are discussed, including examples of people and the issues they face, author Shannon goes into detail on how to get over the roadblocks of each personality type. The book uses the very popular CBT (cognitive behavior therapy) to encourage teens to be aware of the consequences of procrastination and how avoiding/ignoring the issue snowballs it into something truly problematic. There are some light illustrations throughout but they are mostly chapter headings and not really relevant to adding to the discussion so much as decorating the pages so they are less text-heavy.My 14 year old felt that she fit into several of the categories in varying degrees and so was a bit frustrated at the solutions. But she also said it was well written, easy to follow, had some really good points in there, but that it felt extremely repetitive. In all, both of us do recommend this book to help teens become more aware of their actions and the consequences of letting things snowball. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

Finished this book in one seat. It is really easy to understand and follow along, no jargon, just useful advice for teenagers and adults alike. The book deals with procrastination through the different points of view of four fictional characters: Jordan, Emily, Athena and Tyler. Each one representing a "procrastinator type": perfectionist (limited by fear of failure), warrior (only acts when stimulated or pushed to do something), pleaser (postpone their own needs to please others) and rebel (values being in control and wont follow orders unless it makes sense to them). I think it is really easy to discover your type/s ( you can be more than one, and I found out that I can be any of them depending on the situation). In case needed, there are links provided, like with many other New Harbinger books, so you can have access to quizzes and many other extras. The last chapters are dedicated to give solutions, tips and suggestions specifically for each type of procrastinator. If you are a parent, it can help you to find out what kind of procrastinator your child is. You can then see things from his/her perspective and approach him/her in a way that instead of resistance, naturally promotes collaboration.Keep in mind that this is a light, introductory approach to procrastination, perfect as a first read, but if you want to dig deeper make sure to check the resources provided in the book or check other titles. I believe this is enough information for teenagers who want to find real solutions and stop the procrastinating cycle. Getting to know the different reasons why people procrastinate while following the stories and reactions of each character is what makes this book special and well suited for teens. It is easy to feel identified with the characters and to pin point the core values that motivate our procrastination. I found this book very practical and easy to approach and can see the potential for a workbook version. I got my eArc from NetGalley

I started reading this hoping it would help me help others, but every word of advice was useful for me too. I've accomplished a lot this week just by taking the advice here. I suggest teens and adults read it.

INTRODUCTION pre review stepFor me to be CISSP certified is a dream, I am too busy in my work and home , I was trying to be certified since 2013, since that I bought every study guide and practice exam , however I can not complete them because the material is tooooo dry and after reading first 10 pages I feel sleepy and I loose the reading mood, also the exam duration was 6 hours, now in 2018 they reduce the time to three hours, I was excited, because after two and half hours there is no way I can Focus ._( THE BOOK REVIEW START HERE )This is the only book among all of the CISSP materials give me the mood to read from 1% till15% without feeling That IWant to sleep,The way and the explanations are perfect there are no useless words within this book , some other books you find many useless pages just for wasting your time with useless information,In this book they mention everything you need to know to PASS the CISSP certification precisely, they also mentioned clearly that DON'T REALLY ON SINGLE RESOURCE FOR YOU CISSP JOURNEY,The book to the point , give you what you need to understand the 8 domains ,I guess it it good starting point and med point, in other words , after reading this book consider reading another bigger book to have better understanding of the concepts and the terminologies such as cybex study guide or all on one CISSP books for detail explanation, or use YouTube for this purpose.NOTE:I did not tried any of the online resources yet, this review is for the content of the book ONLY

Book seems great, but all of the links are missing from the digital version. The book will having something along the lines of: "See ISC2's website( )"I contacted Amazon and they instructed me to trying deleting the book and reinstalling it on my device. Unfortunately this didn't work, and I was ultimately refunded for the book, and asked to try and purchase it again to see if it made any difference. The purchase price of the book has gone up in the last week (not a great deal but that is irritating), and once purchased again it turns out the links are still not there.

I found this book difficult to read. From the start, the authors spent too much time adding humor that it took away from the content I wanted to learn. I could only get 1/3rd through the book before I decided to use other resources. The good news is, I did pass my CISSP exam.

I received this book, in a zip lock bag, I just now opened it and the book looks all beat up and used the cover is torn a little. Hopefully the material is intact and there are no highlighting ect.. For a book I bought new, this one is very much used.

If you are studying for the CISSP exam this is an amazing resource of knowledge.

This is very concise.

Great book! I found it very helpful! Everything is covered in very simple way! I recommend to everyone who studies CISSP!

Read this book first, before you get into the official material.

I am now reading, concurrently, chapter by chapter, three versions of the Tao Te Ching: Feng/English's, Stephen Mitchell's, and Ursula Le Guin's, which is my hands down favorite. I've owned the Gia-fu Feng/Jane English version for many years and I still love its clear and concise language, it's simple and direct style. Stephen Mitchell's version, in my side by side comparison, is seen to be a more interpretative rendition based on his own understanding of Lao Tzu's meaning. Rather than stay with Lao Tzu's imagery and metaphor, he packages it all up into a kind of exposition of the meaning he derives from those images. This approach may appeal to those wishing for a more conceptual understanding of this great work, but for me, it diminishes so much of the subtlety and a deeper intuitive conveyance of meaning that is only possibly through poetry. This is where Le Guin's version outshines and makes a quantum leap beyond the other two. She retains all the imagery, nuance and flavor of the poetry while capturing a feeling of playfulness and spontaneity. But beyond even that, I find that her ability to hold the paradox and enigma of Lao Tzu's mystical realization allows for a deeper, more inspired reading than the other two.To illustrate what I mean, please bear with me as I compare one stanza. This is Stanza 30 in the three versions:Mitchell:Whoever relies on the Tao in governing mendoesn't try to force issuesor defeat enemies by force of arms. For every force there is a counterforce.Violence even well intentioned, always rebounds upon oneself. The Master does his joband then stops. He understands that the universeis forever out of control, and that trying to dominate eventsgoes against the current of the Tao.Because he believes in himself,he doesn't try to convince others.Because he is content with himselfHe doesn't need others' approval.Because he accepts himself, the whole world accepts him.Feng/English:Whenever you advise a ruler in the way of Tao,Counsel him not to use force to conquer the universe. For this would only cause resistance.Thorn bushes spring up wherever the army has passed.Lean years follow in the wake of a great war.Just do what needs to be done.Never take advantage of power.Achieve results, but never glory in them.Achieve results, but never boast.Achieve results, but never be proud.Achieve results, because this is the natural way.Achieve results, but not through violence.Force is followed by loss of strength. This is not the way of Tao.That which goes against the Tao comes to an early end.Le Guin:A Taoist wouldn't advise a rulerto use force of arms for conquest;that tactic backfires.Where the army marchedgrow thorns and thistles. After the warcome the bad harvests.Good leaders prosper, that's all,not presuming on victory. They prosper without boasting,or domineering, or arrogance, prosper because they can't help it,prosper without violence.Things flourish then perish. Not the Way.What's not the Waysoon ends.Le Guin adds a note at the end of this stanza. She says, "The last verse is enigmatic: 'Things flourish then perish.'—How can this supremely natural sequence not be the Way?" She then directs the reader to another note under a later stanza where she picks up on Lao Tzu's use of a "baby" metaphor to describe how one following the Way acts in the world. She writes: "What is eternal is forever young, never grows old. But we are not eternal. It is in this sense that I understand how the natural, inevitable cycle of youth, growth, mature vigor, age, and decay can be "not the Way." The Way is more than the cycle of any individual life. We rise, flourish, fail. The Way never fails. We are waves. It is the sea."So, rather than change the actual words to make the meaning more intelligible to our conceptual understanding, as in Feng/English, or simply avoid the whole issue by presenting a loose rendition that doesn't follow the original so closely, as in Mitchell, Le Guin presents the enigma as it is and then ponders and digs deeper to try to grasp what Lao Tzu was truly saying. She goes beyond a facile, generic understanding and comes up with something exquisitely profound. The Way isn't about how we're supposed to act in the world. It isn't about us as individuals at all. The Way is beyond all the flourishings and perishings of the temporal world of form. To live in the Way is to live rooted in the timeless, unchanging essence of our Being which simply is, always. Feng/English's and Mitchell's versions don't come close to penetrating into this realization. This is an example of why I consider Le Guin's version to be superior to the others. One minor quibble: Le Guin tells us that the Chinese word "Te" is usually translated as Virtue. She translates it as Power throughout the book because she feels that the word Virtue in contemporary usage has lost its previous sense of "inherent quality and strength of a thing or person." I myself still prefer Virtue, maybe because I'm old fashioned and still think of Virtue in the old way, like the way Plato used it. Another word choice that I believe would convey the same meaning would be the "All-Good." That has both a feeling of Power and Virtue in it. As I said, it's a minor quibble.

This is a problematic book to review in many ways, of which I'll name only three.First, it is not a translation, for Le Guin readily admits that she knows no Chinese. Rather, it is a synthesis from a number of translations, made to (1) emphasize the poetry and (2) to be consistent with Le Guin's understanding of the Tao Te Ching. (Weirdly, I once, under the influence of general semantics, set out to do the same thing, but never got very far...) Thus, her choices are always open to question ... which might be a good thing, and certainly seems in keeping with the spirit of the Tao as best I understand it, which is very little.Second, this is not the first or the second, but something like the seventh rendering of the Tao Te Ching that I have read, partly for the reason suggested above, partly because I hoped through such diversity to achieve something like an understanding. (Up to now, my favorite translation has been that of Crowley, which Le Guin does not use as a source.)Third, and most telling, this is a book you don't just read. You live with it, like a good Bible or Bhagavad-gita. Having read it once, though carefully and ruminatively, does not qualify me to say much about it.Still.My "up-to-now" above suggests that this is now my favorite English Tao Te Ching, and that would be an accurate suggestion. Le Guin's language conveys the meaning (if that's the correct word) of Lao Tzu (Laodze, Lao-tse, etc.) in a way I find particularly apt to that meaning.I will not comment on what the "meaning" is, because that is something that you must discover for yourself if you are to get any value from it; and besides, I am not sufficiently expert to do other than make a fool of myself. But whether it is "meaning" or not, it is there, and Le Guin's rendering brings it to us as well as any I've read.

No wonder Dahl wrote such wonderfully awful characters as Ms. Trunchbull (sp?)--he had real-life inspiration! I read his account of getting his tonsils out to my 6th grade students each year to sell them on this book: with no anesthetic, his doctor said, "Open your mouth," and when Dahl did, he darted in with a scalpel and snick-snick, Dahl spit out two globs of flesh and a lot of blood. Well-ah, a tonsillectomy! And the scene of his sister taking the family for a drive in their first car! Oh my god! She didn't know how to turn it or stop it, but she let the little kids persuade her to go faster and faster! Bones are broken! It's nuts! And his teachers. Wow. Corporal punishment with a cane. I like to read the description of being whipped with a cane to my 6th graders when they complain about how strict we are on them so they can realize how good they actually have it. They're so aghast that they argue over who gets to read the whole book. Music to my ears.

Real life good reading. Funny, Compulsive, Driving, Observant. Dahl's own story. I just kept reading and enjoying it. Almost like a book in two parts but he joins them well. One springs from within another. This man knows how to write. I was so grateful to find this book so well written and edited. Not an easy combo to find these days. Excellent, and I don't say that lightly.

Fine book; excellent writing. This is the personal tale of a master storyteller with experiences that are ordinary, yet extraordinary. As a young man working in Africa, Dahl signs up for the air corps and finds himself flying planes he was never taught to fly in battles that were never planned to be. What is most exciting about this book is that real life is more dramatic than anything that a fiction writer could dream up. It is one of the top five books I have read this year, and would highly recommend it to anyone with a sense of adventure. It is hard to portray what it's like to be up there in a Hurricane with enemy fighters after you, but Dahl does it with aplomb. I will wait a while and read this one again!

Another writer once told me that one of the most important elements to be found in a memoir is a "likeable" narrator. Roald Dahl is perhaps one of the MOST likeable of narrators. Modest to a fault and blessed with a very sly and subtle sense of humor, the story Dahl tells in GOING SOLO, his sequel to BOY, is perhaps one of the most readable memoirs of modern times. His story of the quick and almost informal training he received at a flying school in Africa shortly after Great Britain entered WWII, is hair-raising and nearly impossible to believe, except you do believe, because you trust this man. At six foot six inches tall, Dahl was physically quite unsuited to be a fighter pilot, noting that when seated in the various planes he flew, his knees were nearly under his chin and he had to hunch over to fit beneath the plane's canopy. But fly he did, even after surviving one horrific crash in the desert early on in his career as an RAF pilot. He sustained a very bad concussion (which was to come back to haunt him and finally "invalid" him out of service nearly two years later) and had his face bashed in. As he explained to his mother in a letter: "My nose was bashed in ... and the ear nose and throat man pulled my nose out of the back of my head and shaped it and now it looks just as before except that it's a little bent about ..." Dahl went on to fly many combat missions in North Africa and Greece, usually against vastly superior odds, but somehow he managed to survive until the middle of 1941, when the migraine headaches caused by the aforementioned crash made him unfit for further flying. Dahl's nearly laconic and completely unself-conscious manner of writing about the things he did - absolutely heroic things - made me think of Sam Hynes's WWII memoir of his missions in the Pacific theater. Both writers downplay the importance of their roles. They never speak of heroics or derring-do, only about the importance of their comrades, doing the jobs they were trained to do and trying their best to simply stay alive. This was an enormously satisfying, moving and often hilarious tale. After reading these two slim volumes of memoirs by Dahl, I do wish he had written another. I have ordered his slim collection of stories about WWII already. What a wonderful writer - and gentleman - Roald Dahl was. - Tim Bazzett, author of SOLDIER BOY and LOVE, WAR & POLIO

Boy and Going Solo are delightful books! Mr. Dahl writes smoothly and true. There is never any confusion for the reader. The sentences tumble from his pen, flowing in harmony across the pages as you see his life unfold. And what an interesting life! Do read it! You'll be happy you did!

I loved these books, and I highly recommend them. Before I read Roald Dahl's autobiographical books, "Boy," and "Going Solo," I thought that he wrote only children's books. What a pleasant surprise !He was a very talented writer who really knew how to tell a fascinating story, with all the wonderful details that keep a reader interested. I only wish he had written a complete autobiography.

Remarkably good WWII memoir. Dahl here is nothing like his kiddie books. "Solo" is tough, honest, and often downright grim. No romanticized WWII ace flyer bunk here!.

We have the printed and Audio versions of this book. Dan stevens does a very good job of narrating. My 9 year olds were at the edge of their seat listening.

Review

We've got great news for readers who followed the Splendid Sampler in 2016. It was such a successful and fun project that Pat Sloan and Jane Davidson have teamed up with a fantastic group of designers to do it all again. And it's not too late to get onboard. Here's an update on what you can expect, although we hear there are some undisclosed surprises in store... 14th June: Sew Along starts with one block a week. 1st Nov: the 20th block is given out. 6th Dec: start sewing from the book, with blocks announced on Thursdays. 2nd May: planned end date. And, just so you know, the finished block size is 6 inches, just like the first book, so the blocks can be combined. --Today's Quilter, Issue 35
