Margot Mifflin writes about women, art, and contemporary culture. She has written for The New York Times, ARTnews, Entertainment Weekly, The Believer, and Salon.com, and she lectures about body modification at colleges, museums, and universities nationally. Mifflin is an associate professor in the English Department of Lehman College of the City University of New York (CUNY), and directs the Arts and Culture program at CUNY's Graduate School of Journalism, where she also teaches. Wow! This book is rock solid and there is not another book like it. It strikes the perfect balance between genuinely great photos of tattoos and historical shots of tattoo artists and models, (how rare is that? I've bought a lot of books with a disappointing few and blurry shots) WITH a scholarly eye for historical detail IN a very engaging very story-telling, (rather than history lecture) way.I don't know what anyone really interested in tattoo artistry could do without this. It's not just some waffly rah-rah 'ink chicks through history' throwaway. This really is an absolute essential for any tattoo history and historical seminal tattoo artist, OR even just 'what about all the Other tattoos, besides the noble and ubiquitous Sailor Jerry / Ed Hardy etc styles.I'm not sure which made my head explode more. The number of hardcore artists who's work we've seen and seen copied, but who (surprise!) happen to be women, the gorgeous illustrations showing what I would NEVER have seen or known otherwise- early (victorian / edwardian era early tattoos- which I had no clue existed beyond sailor and port shops) were actually EXTREMELY well done and extremely patriotic, elaborately well framed and shaded portraits, anatomically (think 'audubon' quality) butterflies, birds and wildlife, intricate costume like lacework ends to tattoo sleeves and leggings- tons of deeply thought out well-excecuted patriotic drawings- IN tattoo, or the clobberingly well researched and well documented history of tattoos and society- PRIOR to what I always thought WAS 'the dawn of tattoos in the US- that 30's-50's era sailor and hotrodder artwork. Yes it's great and I love it. But how many people know that beloved SJ and Ed Hardy etc, that was the SECOND wave and a whole SECOND style of tattoo? There was a world of talent and a whole society (even high 'society lady') tattoo well before the sailor and flapper era? I didn't. That makes this book invaluable for anyone, and not (not hardly) just for 'women tattoo artists' or 'women issue historians'.This is anyone's 'missing era of tattoo history, complete with great photos" essential. If you don't have the thousands of dollars for ALL the tattoo and tattoo history books you want, this is one that cannot go missing from your shelves. Margot Mifflin does a sh*t-ton of genuine scholarship on tattoos (women-centric but well beyond), includes tons of artistic as well as hard to find documentary photography, and has a real gift for accessible vivid but also accurate, narrative.If you think this is a great gift for the 'lady tattoo artist or follower' in your life, you're right. But you are only half-right. Because this is a really visually stunning (and so, well worth the $$ right there- a spot-on No Regrets purchase for anyone at all who 'likes tattoos' of any kind) but also a Must-to-Have for any tattoo style and or tattoo history collection.If this lands in every 'woman's art and social history' collection, great. But it would be a crime against history and against tattoo especially if this weren't a staple read and look - in every tattoo person's or even just art and culture history person's collection. And for under $20, compared to the honking high prices of tattoo books- this is a total value as well.

Margot Mifflin sublimates subversion in the subculture of tattoos by exploring the art through the lenses of the female embodied in the art, as the canvas, and the female who is the artist painting on said canvas, the tattooed. She records a vibrant history in Western, predominately American culture with a nod to the Victorian, society of circus ladies, side show girls, “the tattooed lady,” and how these “freaks” were the precursor to the current millennial cultures enrapturement with ornamentation as a way to fit into a subculture that has only recently become more mainstream and accepted.Mifflin takes a great deal of effort to showcase the history of the tattoo and the tattooed as it is reflected in feminine society. Where women may have first been coerced by partners, husbands, boyfriends, many being wives of male tattoo artists, to get tattooed, they soon became a quiet underground culture of a new kind of femininity which in bold colors and designs became a way to lay claim to the body. She also, side by side, develops the history of the women tattoo artist, exploring racism, why are there so few African American tattoo artists, sexism, women’s bodies being used to sell products, or women tattoo artists being compelled to be sexier—which has never been an issue for the male tattoo artist, and ownership of creative control—who gets to tattoo and why.A mostly historic look at how tattoos and tattooing came to be an underground sup-culture of the perverse and the perverted, the book also has a fascinating underlying theme of women re-claiming their bodies after traumatic experiences—from sexual violation to covering up mastectomy scars—using tattoos as a creative expression of post traumatic growth and resiliency. As one of the few books on the history of tattoos in women’s history it is a read well worth undertaking for anyone interested in the culture of tattoos in Western society.

For someone like me, who knew nothing at all about tattoos beyond seeing them on other people, this is a great introduction. The book covers the history of tattooed women, gives personality sketches of various artists and collectors, and describes the ways women have struggled to join the profession and add their contributions. The book is a tribute to the women it covers without being preachy. The photos (some black-and-white, some in color) are lovely. I really enjoyed it, and it made me want to get a tattoo myself! What I came to appreciate later was how respectful the book is of the collectors and the art. I went online for more pictures of tattoos and information about the process. Site after site featured sad pictures of naked women folded up into submissive postures, with the tattoos so secondary that sometimes they were only partially visible and most of the time you couldn't make out the art at all. And this was on supposedly mainstream sites that advertised themselves as featuring art for women. It made me appreciate the book even more. I wish there would be a Volume II.

This book combines three of my favorite things in life: tattoos, history, and feminism. This is a fantastic, fascinating read. And the gorgeous pictures just make it that much better. I can't believe I waited so long to read this.As a heavily tattooed woman myself, it really made me appreciate the rich history of tattooed women, and the role it plays in why, where, & what we get tattooed. The concept of using it as a way to own my own body in the face of abuse & the litany of legislation written by old white evangelical men to tell me what I can & can't do with my body was something I had never actually consciously THOUGHT about, but it really struck home with me.This book made me even prouder to be a feminist, and a tattooed one at that. I bought a copy for my (female) tattooist as well. I hope she enjoys it as much as I did.

First, let me say the Stuebner book is also a bad guide for the Boise area but for different reasons. Basically, there's no great guide for the Boise area.OK, now this guide book will more or less get a rider close to some good trails. That is a good thing and also the reason I'm awarding 2 stars rather than 1. The author mentions in the preface that he understand many users may not like the number of roads he advocates using to create loops. He's not kidding. More than 50% of the suggested tread in this book is paved surface.The author focuses on documenting actual loops for the rider rather than out-and-back trails. Great. Except... There's 100+ miles of trails in the Boise area, maybe as much as 150 miles. There's no good reason to ride roads on a MTB in the Boise area with all of these trails.The maps and elevation profiles are better than the Stuebner book but that's not saying much. This book is only slightly better. The maps routinely leave out misc trails that connect to the main loop that the author is trying to document. Imagine riding a trail that has 5 left turns within a 2 miles stretch and trying simply guess which left turn is proper without any indicators on the authors map or text. A simple "take the 3rd left" would have been great.I'm a new rider to the Boise area and I need to say, these hills are tough. I wanted a decent book to help me understand how tough a trail would be without getting myself in over my head. This book is pretty much worthless in that regard. There are 40 rides in the book and I'd guess only 5 of those rides are completely on dirt. Who wants to ride a 28 pound MTB around the roads? So I have the 2 Boise area guidebooks and the only thing I learned was where the big trailheads are. I have spent many a frustraing day lost in back country.If a person wants a better resource, goto [...]The map that is available through Ridge to Rivers is not a complete trail guide but it is acurate and more or less easy to use. It's $5 and it's worth 2x the cost of both Boise area MTB guidebooks. It's also available at most local bike shops and the REI.Maybe you can find this book at half.com for $1, that's about all it's worth.

This was a phenomenal story and the coolest visual experience. Having lived in large cities for all of my adult life, I have walked by thousands (probably millions) of stickers on stop signs, newspaper boxes, etc. It was fascinating to read about the artistry behind the sticker, and it makes you look more closely at the stickers you walk past every day. It was amazing to read this artist's pursuit of such a large-scale event. The artist/writer's passion for his community and vision to elevate such a cool art form comes through the pages. Buy it! It's great.

If you're a sticker head or a fan of street art in general this a dope book full of some of the best artists on the street right now! You never get this many artists or sticker art put together like this - the creator of the book is obviously a dedicated lover of the streets and the art we cover it in! Lots of familiar names - including my man and a few good friends! I highly recommend this book!

I bought it for my boyfriend. It was a surprise gift because he want it but at the time I try to buy one it was sold out. He is very pleased with the magazine. He just love it! I think it was an excellent gift, he spend hours and hours reading this magazine. I honestly recommend it. EXCELLENT!

And what a waste to force a brilliant man like this into retirement before he even turned 40! The nation then missed his service in what would have been his prime years. A sad situation repeated too many times with the rapid turnover of leadership in the Nigerian armed forces. A must read for all serious students of Nigerian history.

This book was really well written and perfectly shows the time period. I never would have read it if I hadn't taken the class that I did this semester which required me to read it. This isn't my type of story, but then again not many are. If you like to read stories that were from our past when slaves were prevalent, then this is the perfect book for you.

This book was banned from many libraries for many years because it is set in the time of Afroamerican slavery in the South. I find it, rather, an honor to the history and literature of a great people, and have loved the book as long as I can remember. The expressive dialect is all but unintelligible to those who did not learn it as children, but for me, it is a joy to read, bringing back the beloved voices of beloved friends.

Back in the days when I was a child Uncle Remus was my hero, I loved the stories that inspired my imagination. The foxes and rabbits weren't just animals I saw in the woods around my home..they were lively characters. Uncle Remus was real to me, he was kind, colorful, and loved kids. I might add that Mama read these books to me before the days of Walt Disney. I think that the characters from the hand of Joel Chandler Harris were even larger than those on the screen. Uncle Remus helped inspire me to become an actor.

These are the old stories from my childhood. Had a big, illustrated Uncle Remus book from Disney, I think. These are the full stories and it is so fun to flash back to those stories. It is also interesting to see the fabric of a part of life in those times that was not known/understood by me as a young child.

Joel Chandler Harris was a an unrepentant southern sympathizer who attitudes towards race are, in my opinion, repugnant. And he did use the character of Uncle Remus in certain stories that supported his twisted viewpoint. Nevertheless, it is my opinion that the animal stories, which Harris borrowed from African slaves on his plantation and which were not original with him, are inventive, funny, and reflect a wonderful view of the foiibles of people in the characters of Brer Rabbit, et. al. These particular stories are in fact, I believe, reflective of the cleverness, the humor, inventiveness and the traditions of the African slaves who passed them along until he wrote them down. I personally read these stories (after carefully screening them) to my children night after night and neither I nor they were "contaminated" with Harris' dismal philosophy. Highly recommended, but, as I say, because of Harris' philosophy, care must be taken, particularly about some of his later "stories", which were no more than apologies for his retarded viewpoints.I would also mention that the dialect versions of the stories, which can be mastered fairly easily, and should be all means be read aloud, are far better than versions converted to "modern english". Some of the dialectal expressions are absolutely charming.

Who doesn't like Uncle Remus? If only more people read stories like these from days passed.

Ive been a Joel Chandler Harris fan for some time, and have read many of the stories, but the sayings in this are wonderful, hilarious, and honest. A refreshing read.

I have both of these and the original ABCs of RPGs as well. The ABCs of D&D is a nice update to the original. However, I was really disappointed with the 123s of D&D, as it only goes to 10 and not 20 (you know, because of a d20). Missed opportunity there. After counting to 10, then it goes into rhyming about monsters, which is nice, but I would've rather seen it go to 20.

This is a very basic, nursery level book of counting from one to ten. It tells the story of three kids in a blended family that play D&D.You need an adult to explain some of the concepts in the book, but it would provide a great chance to talk to kids about role-playing games at their level.My favorite picture in the book is the parents dashing off to the rpg table at the very end.All in all, cute, unoffensive, and a fun romp in the D&D world for the youngest gamers.

I was a Kickstarter backer of "ABCs of RPGs" and it was super cute and my daughter really liked it. I saw this one on Amazon for pre-order and at first thought "How dare they rip off the 'ABCs of RPGs' book!" but its actually the same folks that made it. So here we are. Really cute book, it goes through counting and has a bestiary in the end. It's fun to read and rhymes. My daughter likes to count on each page.

My husband and I both enjoy DnD and we have a 3 year old daughter who I hope will one day enjoy it as well. These books (we also got the ABCs book) are perfect for her age and are just a pleasure to read to her. The illustrations are wonderful and I appreciate the shorter length. They are not meant to be adventure tales. They are books to learn counting/numbers or the ABCs. A 10 year old is probably not going to enjoy READING these although they may enjoy the illustrations. Perfect for nerdy family with very young children.

this book fits right next to the ABCs of RPGs . very funny and cute for a knowledge starter in both 1,2,3's and DND characters/monsters

First off, of course, I got this for kids whose parents are D&D fans.These books (ABCs and 123s of D&D) are great. The illustrations are good quality and the text is simple enough for my young nieces, a few of which think D&D is fun even though they don't fully understand what they're doing rolling the dice.These are an easy and adorable read.

This was a great find for my friend's kids. Their dad spends a lot of time at our house playing D&D a couple of times a month. I found this book to be amazing with a great introduction to some of the monsters and now he can talk to them , tell them stories and show them pictures of some of the monsters he fought while he was away.

I liked the characters. Some of the choices of characters were a little out there for small children (lilithid lich, odd name for bunny for unicorn horn). I liked the story but it was a little short with just 1 number per page but dice in the back group show different numbers that confused my daughter.

Perceptive and original thinking.

Great!

I was really looking forward to this book after reading Ngai's previous book, Ugly Feelings. On the whole, I found this an interesting book but not as fresh and acute as the previous one.The first chapter of this book is a real tour de force, it's simply brilliant. However, I wasn't so convinced by the following three chapters on the cute, the interesting and the zany which Ngai argues are "our aesthetic categories." The attempt to link these categories to a kind of diagnosis of contemporary capitalism is the weakest and least convincing part of the book. It sort of works for the zany but the other two are much less convincing. In Ugly Feelings there was also a somewhat forced attempt to use the case studies to make some larger political point but this was largely confined to the introduction. This diagnostic approach to culture really isn't Ngai's strong suit, her close readings of a range of cultural objects and a very impressive range of cultural theory is where she excels.

Together with Ugly Feelings (2005), this book demonstrates that Sianne Ngai is the most relevant, best read/viewed critic working in contemporary aesthetics. A feminist and Western Marxist, Ngai focuses on the downsides of the post-theological culture celebrated in Manhattan and the Left Bank in the 1960s and 1970s, primarily that it gave rise to contemporary consumerism, which weakens first-world people's aesthetic experience by promoting tepid forms of ambivalence and disavowal of social hierarchies. Zaniness blurs the line between work and play and invites contempt tinged by anxious pity rather than empathy with scatter-brained contingent workers; cuteness is weak care and magnanimity; interest is weak wonder alternating with near-boredom, like spending too much time on Facebook's news feed rather than reading a book, watching a film, listening to an album, having a conversation, or working on a project. After reading this book, I do not envy experimental artists working today if these aesthetic states are what they have to work with.Everyone writing about and teaching avant-garde art should read Our Aesthetic Categories, especially since it relates trends in the arts to pop culture and thus implies helpful ways to teach experimental art by bridging it with the pop culture undergrads are more familiar with. YES, the prose is dense, but so is everyday aesthetic experience in our media-saturated culture, we realize if we slow down enough to think about it. This book plus Liah Greenfeld's Mind, Modernity, Madness: The Impact of Culture on Human Experience (2013), Brad S. Gregory's The Unintended Reformation: How a Religious Revolution Secularized Society (2012), Charles Taylor's A Secular Age (2007), and Nicholas Frankel's annotated, uncensored edition of Oscar Wilde's Picture of Dorian Gray (2011) shows Harvard University Press emerging as one of the top publishers of ambitious historical scholarship about modernity.

Not a quick read, Ngai's thoughts are dense and historically framed. Very enjoyable.

Ngai reinterprets the present through the lens of the zany, the cute, and the interesting. I feel like I've seen anew the TV, jokes, art, books, clothes, technology, etc. that I've been living with. Read this book.
