About the Author
Lynn Johnston was born in Ontario and currently resides in Vancouver, B.C., Canada. She is the first woman to receive the Reuben Award for Cartoonist of the Year from the National Cartoonists Society. She has also received the Order of Canada. Lynn began For Better or For Worse in 1979. She told the saga of the Pattersons for 29 years, until August of 2008, when she retired from the daily production of new strips and storylines.

While I am not sure how big a book can be before it is too big, this massive tome is probably as big as you would want. This sucker is over 3lbs and has 532 pages on quality paper with a durable Hard Cover. It contains over 1,200 comic strips. The Sundays are full page size in brilliant color, while the daily strips run three to a page in sharp black and white.In early 1979 my oldest child was born while in late 1980 my second child was also born. Somewhere in the middle of it (September 1979) For Better Or For Worse started and my newspaper ran it immediately ( and still does). What drew me to the strip was it wasn’t a gag a day strip. The humor grew out of real people and real situations and the characters aged in real time. So we learned and aged together.Lynn Johnston had done a couple previously illustrated books on pregnancy and child birth which we got when my wife was pregnant. Shortly after that a newspaper syndicate recognized her talent and offered the Canadian Housewife a contract.Almost 30 years later Lynn concluded her story in 2008. And the Newspapers begin running the strips again from the start. Of course some changes had to be made and Lynn changed some dialogue and in some cases replaced entire strips. A reference to Cheryl Ladd was changed to Shania Twain in 2008. Now they both seem outdated. Also any strips that featured spanking or any physical punishment had to be changed.This editing processs started early in the strips history when it was first collected into short storyline books. Lynn often removed not relevant strips and added new continuity strips to help them read more like a graphic novel then a collection of strips.This series will be nine volumes in all reprinting the almost 30 years of strips exactly as they came out with no editing, for the first time. The new continuity strips will be be collected in the final volume. In this way this is really the COMPLETE For Better Or For Worse.Mixed in with strips are tiny footnotes from both the Editor and Lynn herself. The editor usually tells you how a strip was later changed or edited. While Lynn’s comments often give you background or insight into the origin of a strip or public reaction it caused. These are a great addition.This is also probably The Library of American Comics most value friendly book. Most of their volumes are about 250 pages and run $50. This one is double the pages and $10 less price. The only feature deprived was the attached linen book mark which is not included here.If you ever enjoyed the strip in the past, I strongly recommend this first volume and subsequent volumes which are planned for every nine months.
I love this comic strip, and having them all chronologically is wonderful. The paper is neat and crisp, and the colors are excellently rendered. The weekly strips are not in color as they are online now, but the Sunday strips are. I especially appreciate the Editors Notes, which are sprinkled throughout to show where edits were made over the years (e.g. the price of a cup of coffee) as that’s just a neat little insight. I can’t wait to invest in the rest of the collection! Keep them coming!
For Better or For Worse has been one of my favorite strips since I began reading it in the early 90s. I had always wanted to read the early years of the strip to find out what I missed. I am thrilled that they are publishing these wonderful strips from the beginning. I enjoyed this first volume so much that I read through it in a few days. I'm looking forward to the release of volume 2.

A fantastic collection of one of the greatest comic strips in the last 50 years. Lynn Johnston has created a family that is real and genuine, and grew over the years. The Patterson family were a necessary read every day when opening the paper, and this collection renews their story for a new generation.
Memories light the shadows of my mind. Misty watercolor memories of the way we were.
Absolutely love this book. I can't wait for the second part to be released .
I've followed this for years and was delighted to see it in a book which I immediately ordered. I love this family and can't wait until volume two comes out in July.
