Nice illustrations and graphic format but totally useless lessons -- unless you want to teach kids that it's good to cut out tongues, cut down forests, and be lazy while others do your work for you.
Jaime Hernandez is one of my favorite storytellers.
Strange folktales that are modern and not culturally mainstream. These do not engage my 2nd graders.
This is a delightful retelling for beginning readers in comic-book form of three Latin American folk tales by award-winning artist Jaime Hernandez (Love and Rockets): The Dragon Slayer, MartÃna Martinez and Pérez the Mouse, and Tup and the Ants. The tales are traditional, but these depictions are from modernized, retold versions by Alma Flor Ada and F. Isabel Campoy, the latter providing an Introduction on “Imagination and Traditionâ€. The three tales are lively and rollicking, and provide good moral lessons on how young heroes can accomplish their goal with bravery, keeping their word, willingness to work hard, and imagination. Two of the three have strong young woman heroines. “The Dragon Slayer†is available in both hardcover and paperback editions, and in English and a Spanish language edition: “La Matadragones: cuentos de Latinoaméricaâ€.
This is a really delightful collection of three of the most believed stories in Hispanic/Latinx culture. I was really nostalgic for the art style, having been made to watch Muzzy the clock-eating alien as a child, and the tales were warm and familiar. It’s also really awesome to have a children’s book that really shows the diversity of Latin America and clearly as well as vibrantly communicates the importance of ingenuity, determination, generosity, love, loyalty, and not waiting for some hero but becoming your own. Also Jaime Hernandez emphasizes the importance of nurturing the strength of women and young girls and cultivating their sense of independence. He also sets out to highlight the tradition of celebrating these women in Latinx and Hispanic culture which is a much needed message, counter to what many of us are taught to believe about Latinx/Hispanic culture in the US and elsewhere.A much need small collection of cultural tales and a much welcomed children’s book debut from the already prolific Jaime Hernandez.
