This is pretty much the only topo map widely available for Joshua Tree NP, and is good enough for a successful trip.The good: It has a lot of trails and landmarks, including some that are not on the National Park Service brochures, and I made good use of this. The material is durable and waterproof (you might not think you need the latter feature in the desert, but I got rained on for most of a day on my trip).The not-so-good: The countour interval is probably a little too big. Oftentimes you can find yourself walking in a canyon from which you cannot see out, but on the map it appears as flat ground. This is especially problematic on some of the trails not mentioned or maintained by NPS; the map also doesn't make a distinction between these trails and the official ones, so you may find yourself somewhere that NPS doesn't really support.I'm also used to some of the other NatGeo maps that have more trail/hike summaries and info about the park's landmarks; this map has a little safety/planning info, but nothing really useful for determining what to see. One entire side of the map is dedicated to the Eastern half of the park, which doesn't really have much of interest to the average person, so this may have been a good spot to add some insets or trail notes.Overall, I'd definitely recommend it, but you may want to couple it with a guidebook or recommendations from a ranger so you know how to get the most of your trip.

For a map that says it is regurlarly updated it is wrong way to often. I live about 30 min from this park and go hiking every weekend. There are trails on this map that don't exist, ones that exist that aren't marked, and the distances are often off by varying degrees. It has one job and does not do it well and for the price especially that is unacceptable. Fortunately it has not caused safety issues but when planning trips I use it more of a guide than gospel.

Just having returned from Joshua Tree National Park, I found this map a generally good all purpose map for roads and major points of interest. Clearly better than a schematic map online (while the park may say they have some maps or brochures, none were available at the trail heads). This map does not have all of the turnouts or points of interest. You can't use this for navigating with map and compass in the back country; the scale is too big. Do you absolutely have to have this map to visit the park? No. Is it really helpful? Yes.

Informative but not totally necessary. Most of the trails in Arches are pretty tame. The only information this gives you that the park map doesn’t is the topography, which you don’t REALLY need. But it’s nice to have if you do the Devil’s Garden loop.

Not a hiker, boughht these maps for possible insight into the topography of the NP itself.

The map is highly detailed with important landmarks clearly marked and distances (in miles) between various points on the map. Having the distances between points is especially important when planning hikes. The map is waterproof and tearproof making it easy to carry and pull out of the pack whenever it is needed. This map is much better than what is provided by the National Park Service. Highly recommend to have this for full enjoyment of the park and it is an awesome park!

Complete waterproof map with basic background information about the area, the two parts of the park (more remote, inaccessible East & more visited, accessible West) spread over the two sides. Shows contours, trails, paved and partly paved (or gravel/dirt) roads, as well as amenities/services. Feels good and folds easily. Good companion to a trip and guidebook.

It is good for an overall overview, but beware that a lot of the trails (e.g. some parts of Ryan Flat to Boy Scout to Black Canyon) do not exist officially or anymore (but going off trail is relatively easy). The large scale does not help much in the little narrow canyon climbs, and it is easy to take a wrong turn. Nothing very serious at the end, it will bump your navigation skills, but keep your eyes open :)

The author was the oldest.Reading about this wonderful family was a joy that I would hate anyone to miss.After the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor many of the Japanese were sent to internment camps. Many of them lost everything they owned. The Sato family, as usual, endured this period with dignity and perseverance. They were cheated out of half their land, but were eventually able to return to what was left of their property and buildings and did what to many would seem impossible--they cleaned-up, re-planted and rebuilt.This is a wonderful book--no matter which edition you read.

I seldom read memoirs, but after meeting Kiyo Sato at a writing-related event in Northern California, I went home and ordered the book. Until I moved to California in 1980—after attending high school and college in other states—I’d never heard a word about the Japanese internment camps of WWII. Even today, the topic is written out of the history books in nearly two dozen states.Ms. Sato covers nearly one hundred years in her memoir, beginning with her Japanese grandmother sending her son Shinji to the United States to seek a better life in 1911. After years of back-breaking labor, Shinji Sato and his wife Tomomi carved out a living on their own farm near Sacramento, where they grew fruits, nuts, and vegetables. For years, the Satos grew and sold tons of top-notch produce to feed their nine American-born children.The future did, indeed, look promising. That is, until Executive Order 9066, signed by President Franklin Roosevelt in February 1942, authorized the roundup, transportation, and internment of approximately 120,000 men, women, and children of Japanese ancestry from the West Coast. Every person with more than 1/16th Japanese blood was included. Over two-thirds of those people were American citizens. And yet no Japanese American or Japanese national resident in the United States was ever found guilty of sabotage or espionage, according to the University of California Japanese American Relocation Digital Archives. The government took over part of the Colorado River Indian Reservation to build this particular Japanese internment camp. Oddly enough, the camp was built by Del Webb, who later became famous for building retirement communities.Kiyo Sato’s story represents many of these families. The strength, hard work, and powerful family ties of the internees ultimately allowed the Sato family and others to survive the harsh conditions of the camps, and to reestablish new lives after the war. It’s impossible to read this book and not cry. And yet the Satos never cried for themselves. Instead, they persevered and even prospered as the years went on. The power of love and of believing in one another can surmount nearly anything.President Gerald Ford rescinded Executive Order 9066 in 1976, several decades after WWII ended. Are there other citizens we treat differently today? Do we deny freedom to certain individuals? How about in other countries? This fine book is a memoir, not a novel. Although I've read more than a little about the Japanese-American experience during WWII, I can't recall a book so personal and so complete. We see an immigrant family from its beginning in California, through the years establishing the farm as the kids live as regular American children, and finish up in modern times with an accounting of the descendants of that original family.This is an excellent record of the history of a family, of course as seen by one of its members. Recommended for anyone interested in the trials and successes of this particular Asian immigrant group.

This book is not only the definitive chronicle of the Japanese-American internment during World War II, it is also the definitive how-to for child rearing. Kiyo Sato's story of her mother and father's contributions to her upbringing is a roadmap to producing a successful family. It is also the best description ever of the unfairness of imprisoning American citizens simply because they looked like the Asian enemy. Many Americans looked like Germans and Italians, yet no German-Americans or Italian-Americans ever suffered imprisonment or had their property confiscated. It ranks on the 'Shame Scale' with America's treatment of Native Americans.

I am grad that this book finally became available in Asia Pacific Kindle store. I happened to find out that last night at the cafe, I immediately downloaded and started reading. I am still in the middle of the story, but I already like the story very much. Personally, it is like reading Japanese immigrants' version of "Little House on the Prairie" with nine kids. A young couple from Japan with full of hopes and plans for their future in America build their life one step at a time, despite of all social and economic hardships. Especilly, I like to read how her family worked in the fields together including children's little hands, had their family time together after dark, like children's learning English but picking up their father's wrong accents. They are such a wonderful, closely knitted family. I wish I were raised in a family like hers. Her story gives me a lot of hopes, courage, and warmth.

Having worked at a multi-family office and worked with many single family offices...I found a lot of great ideas in this book. SInce reading this book, I have referred to RIchard's website, listened to some of his podcasts and generally been very impressed with his depth of knowledge in this niche industry. A great reference which will likely stand the test of time.

Just finished reading this Single Family Offices book by Richard Wilson.  He has some excellent perspectives from the single family office CEO & CIO perspectives in this book and could even take the place of hiring an expensive family office consultant.  My one critical comment is that while roughly 30% of the book is focused on starting a family office, I do wish it had even more details on this area...but it still is the best resource I have found so far on this topic.  The family office advisor community is so small it needed a resource such as this just for single family offices. I also liked all of the additional resources provided throughout the book.  Highly recommended.

Richard puts together content like no one else in the industry. He is masterful in eliciting expertise and experience sharing from leaders that are often considered unapproachable. I continue to read/watch/listen Richard's content because there is always takeaway value.

Mr. Wilson has done it again: written another excellent book! Starting on page 3, there are 4 free webinars offered that are downloadable. They are: Single Family Office Investing; Creating a Single Family Office; Direct Investing, Co-Investing, & Club Deals, and Family Office Investment Priorities. There are many more links to free video clips are also provided, which are short in nature (around 3 to 8 minutes in length) and are to the point.There is a ton of information in every chapter from other sources as well. Mr. Wilson interviews top Family Office Managers and Principles and gleans the very best information that is educational to those wanting to start a family office at any level or experience. I recently was able to take the knowledge from this book and apply it at a recent CIO and REI Allocation Summit and left with 32 new contacts and friends which includes 4 ~ 6 big (over $100 Million) family offices. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in learning more about family offices and working with them.

I'm sorry, but this book does not really give the who story behind what is somewhat falsely mislabeled the Sunni-Shia conflict. It would be much better labeled the Wahabi-Shia Conflict. This is mainly about the US / Saudi alliance in the Middle East. Saudis believe Shias are heretics who are worse than Christians and must be put to death. They actually have the same view of Sunnis who are Sufis, such as Shaykh Hamza Yusuf (Mark Hanson) who follow the Sunni Maliki Madhab. Saudis use the 6 "Sahih" hadith book, not the really the 4 Sunni schools of Jurisprudence, and while Wahabism is similar to the Sunni Hanbali school, Ahmad Ibn Hanbals Musnad is not the Hadith collection used. Where Shia Muslims do not allow Quran abrogation, Wahabis use the 6 Sahih books for Islamic Law.US and the Saudis together armed Al-Qaeda in Syria to remove Al Assad. First, the CIA went int Syria. When UN inspectors were in Damascus in 2011 investigating claims of use of a chemical weapon by Al-Qaeda affiliate Al-Nusra, the CIA and Al-Nusra announced that Al-Assad had used chemical weapons on his own people. The invasion of Obama armed Al-Nusra allowed ISIS to gain a foothold in not only Syria, but Iraq and Afghanistan. Meanwhile, Melkite Catholics pleaded with Obama not to bomb Syria or support Al Nusra. Of course, Wahabis don't like Christians, so the Melkite Catholics suffered. Accusations of chemical attacks by Assad in 2017 and 2018 were proven to be fake, but President Trump bombed without any investigation. Now that Al Assad has Al-Qaeda trapped in Idlib, its last stronghold, and the refugees are now coming back to Syria, Trump has threatened Syria it will begin bombing Syria if Syria attack Al-Qaeda.So, the Arab Spring was mostly the CIA stirring up Wahabis and some others for regime change, and it doesn't matter how many civilian casualties or refugees are created. That is NOT Sunni versus Shia. I am a convert to Shi'ism. My doctor and some of my best friends are Sunnis. Neither of us like Wahabis. So, that means its some Shias and some Sunnis against other Sunnis and Wahabis.If you live in the USA, go to different kinds of mosques and visit the Muslims. You'll know right away which are peace-loving and which are war-mongering. Remember, Al-Qaeda were pushing Shia Muslims and Melkite Christian Postal Workers off of postal buildings in Syria during that so-called Arab Spring War.
