Very disappointing content. The book does not really contain specific details or tips beyond what Dr. Deb has on her website or that can be found elsewhere on the internet for free. Another reviewer noted Dr. Deb's expertise was well worth the price of the book -- that would be true if she had included more details. For example, Chapter 5 "Fill er up" is less than 2 pages. The first page features a large photo of a garden made from wine bottles that takes up half the page; the diagram on the second page which simply repeats her simple formula of "3 buckets of browns to 1 bucket of green" takes up more than two-thirds of the page. That's it. No discussion of various recyclable materials (e.g. are magazines with glossy covers & plastic coating ok to use? What about cans, is there any value to adding aeration by layering cans as another gardening expert suggests?). No discussion of what kinds of manure are acceptable and which aren't (Can I use fresh horse or cow manure? Or does it need to dry out? Can I dump my guinea pig cage contents in there?) Plus no guidance on exactly how to "fill er up." Do we need to line the keyhole garden with cardboard? Do we need to soak it first? Do we need to provide aeration or anything to help with drainage? Do we need to do anything for pH or nutrient balance? Chapter 6 "Bring on the Plants" is also 2 pages, with four photos and text that says little more than to consult seed catalogs, read the Farmer's Almanac, and contact your local agriculture extension service to choose plants. That's it. The book is nothing more than an introduction to the concept of keyhole gardening, at best. I'm very sorry I spent my money on this and will quickly trade the book in. I wouldn't even gift it to a friend, as it has such little value.

This book explains more of the details about keyhole gardening but also about ways to obtain materials and work with groups to build these projects.

Although Brandt is an historian of medicine, his book focuses on social patterns.The Cigarette Century is a long read; expect fifteen to twenty hours. The "century" it explores ranges from about 1880 to 2005--from the invention of the Bonsack cigarette rolling machine, sponsored by the founder of American Tobacco, to the collapse of United States v. Philip Morris, started during the hapless Clinton administration but squashed by the corrupt Walker Bush administration.The best place to start may be at the end, a coda called Epilogue. There, Brandt shows how he emerged from academic historian to committed participant, serving as an expert witness for the prosecution during United States v. Philip Morris. That part of the book most clearly presents his outlooks.The Cigarette Century is organized by themes rather than chronology. There is a sequence of four partly overlapping themes: culture, science, politics and law--intended to explore key eras during development of the U.S. cigarette industry. Each has three chapters of similar length. This approach can make difficult reading, with cross-cutting events and abrupt shifts both forward and backward in time.Text with the four main themes takes about 430 pages. The 632-page book also has an introduction, a stand-alone final chapter on tobacco exports, the coda, an index, 75 pages of endnotes and 32 unnumbered pages of halftone figures--between pp. 184-185 and 408-409--with several historic cigarette ads. Choice of endnotes rather than running footnotes makes references difficult to follow and use.Brandt's writing style can seem anodyne: long words and sentences. In several places where tables or charts would help, there are long paragraphs instead, sometimes more than 300 words. However, the command of the topics is matchless. Brandt spent 20 years doing research, and there is no other single source for the wealth of information his book conveys.

It's been a very long time since I have been so satisfied with the purchase of a book. To wit:- Considering the sloppiness in the composition of so many non-fiction texts published since the turn of the century, the logic and elegance in the organization of this material is utterly astonishing. To all the lazy SOB's who cough up old weblogs and then call them a "book" - LOOK AND LEARN: this is how the contents of a non-fiction book should be organized!- The prose is exactly the right match for the material, sophisticated without being pedantic or jargonish (difficult to accomplish once the topic turns to medical diagnoses).- While exhaustively annotated (70+ pages of notes), the citations do not interfere with the narrative in even a single instanceIt doesn't matter whether you think tobacco producers are heroes or murderers - you should buy this book simply to admire and enjoy the sheer craft of it.

Great read for anyone interested in the topic. Somewhat redundant, and could probably be about 3/4 its current length, but overall the information is good. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the historical/social/political underpinnings of the tobacco epidemic.

This book is well researched and fascinating in parts. However, I'm still struggling to finish it as the editing is awful. Each paragraph is like a separate quip and overall, the progression from cash crop to massive marketing is disjointed. Maybe the second half will pick up, in which case I will revisit this review, but it's painful to read for at least the first 50%.

This is a comprehensive story of the cigarette, big tobacco, tobacco research, public opinion and public policy. It's a hefty book, at 500 plus pages, but it was all interesting and readable. One thing I took away from reading this is how big tobacco could not have gotten away with selling their dealy product without the collusion of the congressmen it bought. It also shows tobacco company executives at their most ridiculous when they repeatedly said there was "no proof" that cigarettes cause cancer, even after there was no doubt.I'll keep this book as a reference.

I don't know that any one book could ever capture the cinematic genius of Alfred Hitchcock, but this one comes pretty close, which is why it's remained in print for many years. If you want to start diving into his films as more than an average viewer, start with this one.

Read this years ago from a library book, but since we now have a collection of Hitch films on DVD / Blu-ray, was time to get a copy for home. It is illuminating to read what this gifted analyst of Hitchcock's films has to say about each film. Read that part before watching one---you'll see what I mean. Alfred Hitchcock once stated that you need to see his films more than once to get what he's doing. I do recommend this book by Spoto.

A comprehensive analysis and criticism of each of the films directed by Hitchcock from around 1925 until his death, written by an author that feels that Hitchcock was one of the few true artists involved in Hollywood film-making during the "Golden Age". This book has been revised from the original edition of more than 30 years ago, and according to the author's introduction with new information and insights. As a few people have noted, two more books have been released by Donald Spoto on Hitchcock that delve into Hitchcock's personal life . This volume has only some brief biographical information, and focuses entirely on his film output with a little background information on film casting and production. What I liked about this book is that the individual analyses were concise and to the point. Spoto is passionate and opinionated about Hitchcock's films, and he does not shrink from making bold statements about Hitchcock's intended themes and symbols. He develops a consistent pattern of criticism, and clearly expresses his ideas with extensive examples from the movies. Perhaps the language of criticism takes itself a little too seriously for the movie buff( of which I include myself), but the book avoids the type of avant-garde film theory that is fashionable among some critics.Spoto grants Hitchcock an exalted status among Golden Age directors for artistic merit, and as a scholar Mr Spoto is very precise and detailed in making his case. Despite the almost evangelical tone to the book, Spoto states in the introduction that his interpretation is not meant to be the final word on Hitchcock, or his flms. While I am not sure how sincere the comment is, it is an acknowledgement of sorts to the strong viewpoints that follow. Whether you agree with the analyses, or Spoto's contentions on Hitchcock as the artist, the book is well-written and makes for informative reading.Many people consider this one of the best and most accessible of the books on Hitchcock's films. Apparently, Hitchcock liked it so much that he invited Spoto onto the set of what would be his final film. Worth a look if you love Hollywood film, probably a must read if you love Hitchcock.

I decided to pick up Vox Day's fantastic "The Irrational Atheist" after rekindling my interest in Christianity from watching his Darkstreams on YouTube. Having been raised Christian, I'd mostly stepped away from it for the past 10 years or so and really had no intentions of returning. Vox Day's take on many different aspects of Christianity that I personally struggled with over the years both surprised and encouraged me to revisit it.I cannot recommend this book enough. Having personally taken the bait before from Dawkins, Harris (somewhat), and Hitchens, Vox Day does not disappoint in roundly destroying their arguments. There is no shortage of evidence to point out their logical fallacies, shocking ignorance, misdirection, and sometimes outright lies of historical events. It is clear Vox Day is an intelligent man and he has a deep foundation and understanding of the Christian faith. He is not afraid to show it. There is also something very appealing about someone who is unafraid to call out others and who is willing to stand up and defend their convictions so openly. If you enjoy Nassim Nicholas Taleb's style of doing this you will not be disappointed in Vox Day's.Pick it up. Whether you are an atheist or religious it is worth it to challenge your worldview.

This is a romp. For someone who has had a sneaking feeling that Dawkins, Dennett, Harris and others of the Bright New Atheists, claim the high ground of reason, when in effect they are the priests of the High Church of Atheism, it is like water in the desert, profoundly refreshing. And this is because Vox Day has read the leaders of this new militant church with care and bothered to check on the 'facts' they so confidently present.He proceeds to demolish their premises, fallacy by fallacy. His taking apart of Sam Harris mostly on the basis that Harris quite demonstrably gets his facts wrong, is cringe making it is so complete. That an academic could be quite so shoddy in his arguments comes as a surprise. The often quoted idea that religions are the main cause of conflict and war, is demonstrated beyond doubt, to be entirely wrong. The writing is clear and crisp and - if you are one of those who finds the in-your-face atheism of the evangelical kind both unphilosophical and crass in its portrayal of religious mysticism, this book is for you.

He details the threat of modern atheism in a distinctive way. A must for anyone concerned about losing their freedom of thought.

Vox tears apart the dishonesty of the new atheists and their dishonest rhetoric. He makes a strong case, and while I don't agree with him on every critique, his work is a clean and honest rebuttal of the modern atheist perspective. Vox talks consistently from a scientific and scholarly perspective and the new atheists really can't hold up as well as I would have thought.

Vox Day surprised me here by posing questions that counter the atheist arguments quite well. He also shows where the historical claims made by the new atheists are just flat wrong being based on a broad understanding rather than a deep or in depth one. There's actually quite a lot of history in the book overall as well, which is always interesting.

The arguments and their deconstruction are still relevant all these years later. I would recommend this book to anyone who is searching for God, wants to understand how to structure a rational argument or is looking for a reasoned deconstruction of new atheist thinking.

Interesting. Day does not attempt an attack on atheism per se, nor an over all defense of faith although he is a christian himself, he points out how the "new atheists" chiefly represented by Dawkins, Hitchens and Harris at the time failed to make a rational case for their atheism.
