Antony Beevor served as a regular officer in the 11th Hussars in Germany. There are two interesting recent books out that detail the vast scope of WWII. I've bought both (and read other histories of the war), and can give some details as to their differences.This book is a typical descriptive historical narrative of the war. It is great single source for those who haven't read a comprehensive history of it. It fairly and with good balance describes the political background and military events and while the writing is somewhat prosaic it is not 'dry', and it gives a well detailed overview of the events.Hastings book "Inferno" (published in Britain as "All Hell Let Loose") carries with it a lot more personal observations from diaries, letters, etc of the participants, and clearly is written with the authors own subjective interpretation or points of view on the events, rather than being a pure description of the historical events. The writing is more elegant and provocative, as befits the journalist background of the author.If one has no knowledge of this titanic struggle I would start with Beevor's book so as to capture the events and timelines as they historically occurred, written in a very readable manner. On the other hand if one is familiar with most of the history I would recommend Hasting's book as a source of opinionated (but supported) insight, along with the many descriptions of the war by participants that are included in his narrative and relate to the historical events.Both are excellent in their own ways. They provide: 1)in the terms of Beevor's book a well written and accurate single volume historical description of the war and 2) in Hastings a more 'op-ed' description with personal stories of the conflict that he has derived from letters, diaries, interviews etc.

No author writing about WWII can cover the entire conflict in one volume without choosing to emphasize certain material and paying less attention to other material. After all, Churchill took many volumes to discuss his experiences and points of view. Having read enormous amounts of WWII material over 50 years, here are what I feel Beevor chose as emphases and which led to both the strengths and weaknesses of the book.Strength-- the detailed descriptions of the China-Japan conflict with more attention paid to it than in other one volume works...Strength-- An attempt, though overdone and repetitious, to discuss the use of rape and the casualness of killing civilians by all armies and at different intensities. War dehumanizes.Strength--Chapters on the Shoah (Holocaust) by shooting and by gas as two different and differentially organized events.Strength--Use of statements by common soldiers about what their experiences were on the different fronts. This is also a...Weakness--vastly overdone quotations from ordinary soldiers about their experiences. How many times did we need to hear about lice and trench foot? Once was enough and other instances could have been referenced to one original description. Repetitive and overdone.Weakness-- Horrendously judgmental character sketches of the major players written in a couple of sentences with no backup.Weakness--Overly focused on British activities.Weakness--Presentism--Judging the events of the past using perspectives unknown at the time of the events.Weakness- Beevor just does not like Churchill and commits character assasination at every opportunity. One wonders if he even read Churchill's memoirs of the war to discover his thinking.Weakness--Writing Roosevelt off as a naive lightweight.Weakness--the maps, oy vey, the maps. Beevor commits the sin of using maps that often do not have the units he writes about in the text present on the maps. He regularly makes statements like "it was obvious that General X had to attack on the line from A to B without either town on his maps. Frustrating!Weakness--Assuming that the US lack of desire to make troop movements to attempt to block the Red Army were silly and naive and the Cold War was the result. As the Italy campaign showed, attacks from the Mediterranean theatre might never have ended the war. And Russian troops had orders to start WWIII if we tried to take Berlin.Worth reading for its scope and unique contributions just don't swallow the human judgments and one liners about people's characters as gospel.

World War II claimed more lives than any other conflict in human history. The way it scarred people in so many places makes it one of the defining moments (probably the defining moment) in the modern history.For USSR and its descendants, WWII has always been the main goalpost in History. The country paid a terrible price (40 million lives is the current consensus). There are very few families which came unscathed from that war - an overwhelming majority lost relatives who fought, died in occupation or starved due to terrible conditions, so WWII is not some historical event we encountered - it is something that we were part of, paying the price (both of my grandfathers fought and were lucky to come back; one of them had his parents killed by Germans when they took all 1,800+ Jews remaining in Yalta outside of the town and shot them; I can go on and on). Needless to say, WWII is a not just a historical event for me - it is part of me and part of my family history.Well, back to the book - it is amazing. First of all, it is very comprehensive: the Author manages to give a robust overview both at a "macro" level, digging into major political events that shaped the War and at the same time to cover seemingly every single battle. This results in a great balance for a topic that could easily fill dozens of volumes.One of the most important aspects of this book is a very strong attempt to remain objective. The Author does a really great job here: there are no favorites and no "sacred cows." Mr. Beevor doesn't shy away from pointing out the opportunistic and erratic side of Sir Winston Churchill. He also has some good words for Stalin when they are due and he does a great job depicting the intricacies of the power struggle between the leaders of the Allies. In general, Mr. Beevor has few kind words to Allied leaders overall, showing numerous cases where shameless politicking took priority (it is ironic, how Poland, that fell the first victim of the War ended up a bargaining chip between the three allies with zero consideration for the suffering and aspirations of the Polish people).One of the most profound realizations of this book is what a terrible price people paid for human folly. Time and again, there are examples of battles that were poorly planned, done out of hubris or in order to improve a general's self-image and it is heart rending to read about so many young lives lost to that. And then, there is USSR, where tactical genius of Wehrmacht was countered with sheer number of people thrown into that meat grinder.As I indicated above, WWII means a lot to me and my family history. As someone hailing from USSR (and brought up in the gloss of the official propaganda about the War), I find this book very fair. The Author has no illusions on the dictatorship that country was and he does a good job demonstrating the very successful game Stalin played to ensure that USSR extended its sphere of interests far beyond its original borders. If there was ever a great example of applying Machiavelli in practice, this is definitely the one.Moreover, the book provides many detailed accounts for the one of the most suppressed and furiously opposed (by official propaganda) aspects of the Russian onslaught: the mass rape of women in Prussia and Germany. Soviet party line has always been that this was a lie coined by USSR's enemies and that incidents were extremely rare and always against the orders. The Author clearly dispels this lie with many detailed examples coming from many sources, showing that the War definitely exacerbated the best and the worst traits alike. The book gives an estimate of up to 3 million German (as well as their victims which included Jewish women and forced laborers) women raped over the course of that period.To summarize, I am extremely happy with this book. I find it fair to all sides (including the Axis) of the conflict, comprehensive and very detailed. This is a book I'll keep and will definitely read again. If you are interested in WWII, read it - you will not regret.

Dark Dragon’s Wolf, by Anastasia Wilde is a trip into illegal and horrific treatment of living beings. It is well written with never a boring moment.  This story will capture your imagination, filling it with suspense and mystery. It's filled with action, adventure, humor, and, of course, steamy romance. It's not necessary to read her other series, but you will meet some characters from them, while at the same time meeting new ones. The story is a definite page turnerTristan and Mayah are both tattered and tortured from imprisonment, torture and drugs. Tristan is have blinding headaches and nose bleeds.  Mayah has lost her dragon from all the torture and experiments she's been through. Both are seeing ghosts and that are calling for help, but are they seeing the same ghosts or their own personal ghosts.As Tristan and Mayah try to figure out why the ghosts are haunting them, they find a Gen-X group may be involved. They enlist help from the Bad Blood crew, the Wild Dragons and even the Red Dragons.This is another five star story and I expect future installments will be just as great and a must read for anyone who loves paranormal romance.  I received an advanced copy of Dark Dragon's Wolf from the author and am voluntarily leaving my honest review.

Tristan and Mayah are my favorites! I loved the first book with Emon and Trish, but there was just something extra special about this one and the bond these two had and the events they had to overcome. They were both so tattered and tortured but they trusted in and relied on each other to get them thru the danger and turmoil and come out stronger with an unbreakable bond.There is so much to enjoy in this book from the suspense, drama, action, danger, and romance to the snark (which I love), the emotional turmoil, mystery and laughter. We get to learn more about the Al-Maddeiri dragons and we also get to catch up with the Bad Blood crew and Wild Dragons and even the Red Dragons jump into the fray. It is one huge dysfunctional family to the rescue! It was great to see them all make an appearance and help out when trouble landed on their doorstep. It was a non-stop adventure from beginning to end.*I received an advanced copy from the author and I am leaving my honest review. All thoughts and opinions are solely my own. Great story filled to the brim with excitement! Tristan has been seeing ghosts, and Mayah has been seeing ghosts, Some of them could be the same ghosts, but why? With Tristan getting sick because of his power usage in the last book, too many of the hauntings may cause worse damage.We meet up with quite a few people from the previous series. The Bad Blood Crew, Wild Dragons and even possible Silverlake Shifter members are discussed and make an appearance.Ever wonder about the White Wolves? How they came into existence and why they are unstable? Some information is given in this book and you must definitely do not want to miss out. I love the way this author intertwines her series so that we can keep in touch with characters that we have fallen in love with.I received a free arc copy and chose to leave an unbiased honest review.

Mayah is a dragon shifter that has been haunted by ghosts. Tristan is a white wolf shifter that has locked away all his failures but now they are threatening to break free. Together they might save each other.While this sort of works as a stand-alone, there are several series intertwined with this one and you’ll have a chance to catch up with them as they join together to fight the enemy.Two broken souls joined with their friends and families to protect shifters from evil. This was an excellent story. I enjoyed the characters and was thrilled to visit with the characters from other stories as they showed up and helped out. What an amazing series the journey that Tristan and Mayah takes you on is mindblowing you just can't put this book down.Dark Dragon's Wolf is full of intense drama, suspense, intrigue, action, mystery, danger, humor, passion, and twists that have you turning page after page. I love the chemistry between Tristan and Mayah they both have had a tortured past can they heal one another and have a HEA this captivating read is so addicting it's a must have book I highly recommend it definitely won't disappoint I love this series Anastasia Wilde is very creative with her writing I can't wait fir the next book.

You are voluntarily leaving your honest review. Finally Tristan gets his peace, love, and family back. It has been a long and very painful road for Tristan but love conquers all. Mayah finally gets her dragon back and finds her new path in life. I love a book where all the past characters are also featured. WOW this one gets all the gang together again. The Bad Blood Crew is in rare form - it was awesome!!! It hurt to read about Tristan's pain and despair but you just knew his and Mayah's love would work out and save the day. Can't wait to read about more dragons and wolves. WOW a very powerful read!!

So much mystery and intrigue, suspense, action, love and etc... in this book. I loved it! I was so glad that I had already read all of the prior series so that I knew who everybody was and what was going on. This can be read as a stand alone but recommend that you read the whole set of series, you won't regret it in fact you will love them. It was about time for Tristan and Mayah got their story and what a story it is.I was given a free book. This review is freely and honestly given.

This is an excellent book about one of the most interesting historical periods ever to occur. I think this is the book that would have made history class interesting rather than the subject we all wanted to escape.Whether you are familiar with the Plantagenets and Tudors or not, this book will tell you everything you need to know on the subject. I feel smarter after having read it.In the beginning I had some concerns that the author may be getting too conversational and relaxed with this work, but the information he provides is flawless. This isn't exactly a continuation of his previous work, but rather a nice compliment to the previous book.If you are interested in the history of England and those who ruled in former lifetimes, this is a great book for you. The author is funny, makes valid points throughout the course of the book and begins before most of the common books on this subject begin, so you get a better picture of the whole time period.Overall, I really enjoyed this book.Recommended.This review is based on a complimentary copy from the publisher and provided through Netgalley. All opinions are my own.

Dan Jones, who gave is a first class account of the Plantagenet line of English kings, now turns his attention to the sprawling, difficult history of two main lines of English royalty, the house of Lancaster and the house of York. This takes up half of the fifteenth century, from 1420 to 1471. It is a terribly involved story, with many Edwards and Henrys, with brutal battles on remote moors, with beheadings – even some of which were marred by cleavers that missed their target, imprisonments, chicanery, and deceit. Almost nowhere do we read of a strong king who was able to draw the country together, to move on from its constant obsession with the concept of conquering pieces of what is now France, to lift the country on to a higher economic and cultural plane. Those efforts came later, beginning soon with the ascent of the Tudors, most importantly with Henry VIII and his daughter, Elizabeth I.Despite the high level of action and even suspense, this story is not at the level of Jones’ previous book on the Plantagenets. It suffers, annoyingly in this reader’s opinion, from a total disinterest in making the story easy to follow. There are detailed geneology charts but the blood lines are difficult to follow and, in some cases, use different names for the same individual. In no case are there any dates on any of the charts. This is a period of English history that is riotous and confusing and it is not made any more transparent by these charts.But let us put this aside. Mark it as a mild objection but not anything crippling. The main story is terrific and when Jones gets his history rolling it is nothing short of gripping. We are led through Henry V’s stirring battle at Agincourt (“we happy few, we band of brothers”), Henry VI presiding over Parliament at the age of two, Jean d’Arc’s rescue of the French army before her destruction at Orleans, the loss of France, Richard III fighting unsuccessfully at Bosworth Field and thus ending the weakening hold on the crown held by the Plantagenets since 1154. Think of this: the Plantagenets and their two main branches of descendants, the Lancasters and the Yorks, for all their weaknesses, had guided Britain for more than 300 years, taking it from the Middle Ages to the brink of Britain’s surge to greatness starting with Henry VIII.I liked this book because it says so much about the drama of English history. On the other hand, reading this book is frustrating for anyone not intimately familiar with the convoluted family tree of English royalty in the 15th century. There are very few hints as to the full dates that are being discussed, very little help in identifying the procession of English monarchs in one easy to read chart, with dates and very little to say about the country itself – its culture, climate, geography, economy, or laws. Overall, it is a worthwhile read but it can be a frustrating read.

This is a fair and balanced look at one of the bloodiest times in England's history. I really enjoy Dan Jones' style of writing. His books do not fall into the category of "popular" history but they do read like them. He truly brings to life the bygone era of which he writes. This book is rich in details of the men and women who took part in the Wars of the Roses. I especially liked Jones' treatment of Richard III. Jones simply presented the facts of the man, both good and bad, without bias. Richard III is such a controversial figure and there are tons of books, both fiction and non, that either praise him as a misaligned saint or the malicious sinner of Shakespeare. I like that Jones stuck to historical fact without judgment, using both contemporary and near contemporary sources. Overall this is an excellent book and definitely worth reading if you have even a passing interest in the time period. The book is clear and concise, which makes it easy to follow the tangled web of the politics and battles of the time.

I would give this TEN stars. This book was amazing. Dan Jones' writing style is absolutely engaging. It reads more like a novel than a historical book, which sucked me in. There was SO MUCH going on that it took me a while to remember all of the characters, but all of the info was completely digestible. It wasn't pretentious or snarky (as if we are all scholars of the Plantagenets) and it was accessible and just...FUN to read. I would, however, suggest reading Dan Jones' book The Plantagenets *before* this one, just to help you get into it and understand why everyone is fighting. (I read this one first, and I wish I'd gone in order - though still totally worth all of the reads.) This book makes me wish I'd studied this more in college. GREAT read. Highly recommended.

I purchased this on a bit of a whim because of an Amazon's $5 off of $20 in book holiday deal and the net result is that I wasted my money. I like retro video/computer gaming and am a bit of a sucker for this kind of stuff and in this case I was definitely a sucker.This book is a bit on the small size. It's about 220 pages of content, but they are small (roughly 8.5" x 5.5") pages. That would be fine if the content was solid (we'll get to that in a sec) but there seems to be an awful lot of white/empty space on the pages. The pages that introduce a platform have roughly 1/5 of the page blank along the outer edge (which contains just a page number) and the pages with game titles that are recommended have plenty of space between each of the 3 entries. This book is certainly not overflowing with content its 220 pages.But if the content was solid for a $22 retail price tag I'd still be ok, but the content appears to have plenty of errors. I just received the book today and in flipping through it for an hour or so I've noted that:Page 132... the title which is supposed to be TurboGrafx is misspelled (yes, the big bold faced title at the top of the page [fortunately it's correct in the index]).In the Atari 400/800 section... 4 pictures of an Atari 400 (different angles), 1 of an 800 XL, but none of the Atari 800. The caption is 400/800, but there's an 800XL and not an 800?? Nitpicky? Maybe.Then there's the TRS-80 section... uhm, I'm pretty sure there were multiple models of TRS-80 computers such as the Model I, III, and IV. To just lump them together is ignorance and certainly not worthy of a book on retrogaming. However, they did break out the TRS-80 Color Computer... yet decided to picture computers other than the TRS-80 CoCo in that section.Then in the Sinclair Spectrum section there's a random photo of a ZX-81 with a printer along with a side view on the ZX-81. Shouldn't those be in the ZX80/81 section. But no... that section is just for the ZX-80 (and the reality is the ZX-80 and ZX-81 are two distinct computers and each should have their own section).Then there's mobile gaming which is left as a footnote in the back of the book.. and I've lost interest in this book.One thing I usually like about these books is getting tips on games that I've missed... especially on other hardware (as I was an Atari guy in the 80s, but am now interested in the various other platforms). Now opinions are opinions, but I just don't get some of the author's opinions. That doesn't mean they are wrong, but hear me out. For a start K-razy Shoot-out is listed as the game to avoid on the Atari 5200. K-razy Shoot-out is a great game and a solid Berzerk clone... that's why it, as the author notes, won an award from EGM magazine. And then the MUST PLAY title on the Commodore Amiga is Secret of Monkey Island?? Yes, a great game, but one that hardly shows off what makes the Amiga special... I'd just as soon play that on any platform. And now even as I am writing this I note that "Oil's Well" as a ColecoVision Must Play title is misspelled. I'm just finding way too many errors.In a nutshell, this looks like a rush job of a book meant to cash in on the popularity of retro gaming. It has some nice pictures, but certainly shouldn't be your #1 choice for a retro book... and probably should be your #2 either. You can do much better.

I got this book to remind me of my old days of computing and games consoles when I was a kid. Physically this is a very well made book, with nice colorful card stock like pages, and with a layout that almost anyone can read and enjoy.However the book which is set out as a time line does have a several errors and absent systems in it.Note that I ordered this book released for deliver on November 6 for $19.99. On November 6 the priced was changed to $17.99 so I apparently paid that. Then later that day I got a partial refund because the book was reduced to $13.51. The on November 7 the same hardback book was showing a price of only $9.47 (for new) which I did not get a refund. Now when I look for this it is showing it again for $13.15.

 Peter Leigh has done a great job at describing all of the major gaming consoles and computers from the 1970s, 80s, and 90s. For each system he gives a detailed description, basic stats, pictures, and three representative games - the "must see", "must play", and "must avoid". Peter's descriptions are funny and spot on. He also brings a unique UK perspective, and describes gaming systems that were widespread not just in North America but also in Europe and Asia.As other have noted, the book did suffer from a few spelling mistakes, missing words, a duplicated paragraph (p.70), and a misplaced photo (p. 130). It feels like a second pass by an editor could have caught all of these. Perhaps a second printing could be done that corrects these boo boos. But aside from these, the book is an excellent reference that I'm sure I'll be using over and over again.

First impressions: great, solid, colorful little tome nails the aesthetics. Content strikes me as an excellent swath of the market for the beginner, and for anyone who has a passing interest in history, tech, or business, there is a lot to learn here. Obviously a labor of love and surprisingly heavy on content; easily could have taken up a solid 60+ pages with no images and tight literary formatting. A bargain for hardcover at this price, and well packed.One does get the feeling with the font size and layout that a large format coffee table treatment was the original intent and would be the best fit. Perhaps if it sells well, we can get that along with the usual editing fixes etc.

I follow Nostalgia Nerd's YouTube videos about retro computing . He is very informative and funny. When he mentioned his book, I wanted to support his efforts and bought one .As a start, the book is quite good and contains a number of retro computers and consoles all the way to X-Box. Each entry has a story and three sections about games must see, play and avoid .However, the size of book is small ( not that of a coffee table ) and the fonts used describing the games are very tiny (and usually in a dark background.)There are some computers not mentioned in the book. For example - Tangerine Oric1!/Atmos, Tatung Einstein, Grundy Newbrain, Memotech MTX, Enterprise 64/128 to name a few. I hope some of these will be included in the second edition.Overall a nice reference book , but not definitely for your coffee table.

So, this is a well done and written book. For the quality, I felt the price was acceptable. My only gripe, which shouldn't effect the score, I was hoping to get an entire systems list. For example, Sega Saturn has general American and Asian versions of their console, then they have versions that were manufactured by Hitachi. I would've wanted to see All known versions of all of the systems mentioned. Other then that, it's a great book. Way better for collectors or people with a lack of video game system knowledge. For someone like me who's in between, it's a hit or miss.

The book is very sweet, very attractive, a very small softcover book, about the size of a smart phone. HOWEVER, to ship it, Amazon slapped it between two sheets of pliable corrugated cardboard that had some kind of light adhesive on it; that may have kept the little book from slipping around during shipping but the top corner of the cover had been creased during insertion. No time to reorder so I tried to flatten it down and ended up giving a sweet little book with an obviously marred cover as a Christmas gift. Amazon, your products are good, your service is good, but STOP DOING THAT ADHESIVE METHOD OF SHIPPING. You blew this one.

Four stars--this is a new author for me---I thoroughly enjoyed the story! There were some grammatical errors but nothing to keep me from enjoying the story. The storyline & characters were great--I do highly recommend this story to everyone---it is a clean read! It was an interesting story concept.

If I could give more stars I would ! I loved this book....I could not put it down. I read it in one day. Even though there was some violence and sadness in the book there was more love and happiness to make up for it. I was overwhelmed by Anika’s story but it was wonderful the way she always put her daughter before herself. I would love to see a sequel to this book with Savannah and Dayton as the main characters

Every page of the book was spoiled by errors in spelling, punctuation, word usage, bad grammar, and character name misplacement. I felt like taking a red pen to the whole thing! I would not read another book by this author because I was so annoyed. She would benefit greatly in sales by hiring a competent proofreader.

The story premise was pretty good, it certainly had potential. There are glimmers of good descriptive writing. However, there were two critical issues. The first was the perplexing decision to write the story in the present tense. "she enters the room..." "she runs to the barn" "he hugs her..." etc. It is so distracting. It seems as if it is a rough draft writing ABOUT a story she intends to turn in to a screenplay. I have NEVER read a book written in this fashion.The second was the over the top extremity of the abuse the protagonist suffered at the hands of her PTSD husband before he himself was murdered. It was overly imaginative and fell short of believable. Then having Glenn begin to behave similarly due to his PTSD was like, oh, seriously??? She would not have stayed. And he would not have changed without some help. There were too many unrealistic leaps of reason.This author has some remarkable raw talent, and potential, but this felt very rough drawn and needed some finesse. I won't buy any of her further works without doing a look inside quick peek or a sample, to make sure it is not written in the excessively distracting present as it happens tense.

Great understanding of what happens to most men when they go off to war. War is a hellish experience to go thru and it does change you, many times it is not good. I thought the authors discussion on forgiveness was excellent and very sensitive to the understanding of what and how men deal with the traumas war they have just experienced. I liked the strong Christian attitude throughout the book.

I really liked the story. It was well written, except for editing issues which seemed to get worse as the story progressed. Aside from that it has a great story line and good characters. It made me laugh and cry. Anika’s daughter brings a bright spot to the story.

5 Stars. Excellent read. I would recommend. Has love, humor, a bit of mystery. Loved the characters, and writing style of this author.

Wow, just reading the except got me hooked on the book, and i bought it. Great heartfelt story. Thank you. P.S. I will read more of this authors books. For sure.
