It's simple but it's not easy - meaning, if you already knew how to bake a great loaf of g-free bread in this manner, you wouldn't need the book. This is the case for most of us, especially those who wrote negative reviews. I have several failed batches and waited to write my own review to test some theories after failed attempts. I researched "why is my gluten free bread sticky", for example. I found various explanations. Finally, I found the answer that applied to MY loaves. I was using SWEET white rice flour. ALAS, when I finally got to the point of reading the book (and not skipping ahead to the recipe section like I originally had) the authors clearly state NOT to use sweet white rice flour, and that they used stone ground white rice flour. It made a world of difference. I also noticed that my oven lost a ton of heat and took longer to pre-heat, so the themometer recommendation was key. Also, knowing what the spring form method was helped me to follow the steam bake method better and more carefully. I had previously left the oven open too long and used cold water instead of warm. I suspect that some of the negative reviewers who said the loaf of bread was like a brick didn't let the initial rise take place, or that they didn't properly mix the master flour mixture. As for personal taste, I love the flavour and texture, crisp outter crust, chewy/tender inside (not sticky). My daughter would like a lighter loaf so next time I will move on to the oatmeal sandwich loaf. We tried the brioche and challah donuts. I personally loved the challah ones. I'm so glad that I didn't throw in the towel, we are so happy with these recipies now that I am following the science.

11/14 UPDATE: Hi GF buddies, I've got a lot of info below; but what I really think you need to know is that we just got through eating two plates of GF Apple Cider Beignets and they were DELICIOUS! We're from Louisiana and know our way around a beignet. While I am very concerned about creating a healthful, wholesome GF loaf of bread; but I almost wept it was so wonderful to bite into those fried puffs of cinnamon sugar coated heaven this morning accompanied by a mug of cafe au lait and a crackling fire (queen of the world today!). It felt so NORMAL! I used the Apple Cider Brioche dough (xanthan gum, don't think psyllium would have made such a perfect sweet dough) and let it sit in frig for about 36 hours. It rose beautifully into a soft orb of fragrant dough (once you read the recipe you will have a hard time believing it could be edible). The dough rolled out easily on rice flour dusted counter--no sticking, tearing or drama. The authors recommend rolling dough 1/2" thick so I fried one per instructions. It was good but a tiny bit doughy. I went 1/3" thick next and it fried up perfect. But, being a fan of the "real deal" I wanted a fatter, puffier beignet. My best results were rolling the dough 1/4" thick, folding in half onto itself and lightly rolling til I got about 1/3". That gave me best results, as did frying at 375. Bonus points, whereas the cooking oil is ruined rather quickly with flour-based beignets, this dough didn't mess up the oil at all. This same dough can be used for traditional doughnuts if that is your happy place :>). Bon appetit! I used the remaining Apple Cider Brioche dough to make the Apple Pear Cranberry Coffee Cake. The dough/fruit mix turned out delicious, but we did not like how sickeningly sweet the streusel topping turned out, and there was way too much of it. Recipe called for half the streusel in middle and half on top. Next time I will make 1/3 the streusel mixture, substitute oat flour (didn't like the sandiness of the rice flour in this context) and only sprinkle on top layer. The pear sweetens the fruit mix nicely and I want to taste fruit not sugar.-----------------2014 has been the year of the search for tasty, edible gluten-free products. The search has been frustrating, expensive and mostly unsuccessful. For the most part I've decided I'd just rather go without than eat mediocre food. "Sandwiches" are made with various fillings piled in a crunchy romaine leaf. A couple of gluten-free crackers that I actually really like hold my goat cheese and salamis in place. I've got one good cold cereal on the list and am glad I already loved gluten-free steel cut oats.I sold all of my beautiful bread-baking books (old friends one and all) because it made me sad to see their bindings and know I won't enjoy the end result of all that hard work those great bakers put into their books. I sold all of my "five minute bread" cookbooks as well after copying the few gluten free recipes I liked.I can honestly say I wasn't expecting much from this new effort by Hertzberg and Francois; but appreciated that they took the time to do this. When this cookbook came up on amazon vine for review I grabbed it fast.I've spent the past two weeks baking from the books and am learning how to make a satisfying gluten-free loaf (that my husband didn't know was gluten free-hooray!). Like all bread baking a truly excellent loaf requires a bit of alchemy--terrific fresh ingredients, good clean water, crunchy seeds/grains, etc; but mostly excellent technique. I think most people will be able to make an edible loaf from this cookbook that beats a $6-7 store-bought loaf. People who are patient and are already good at baking bread are likely going to be able to make a very good to excellent loaf using any number of a variety of recipes. If you weigh ingredients, use a good mixer, have a baking stone and a well calibrated oven you're golden :>).I started by making one bucket of the #1 all-purpose flour mix and one bucket of the #2 whole grain flour mix (hooray that I kept all my bread making equipment!). I used about 30% of the flours/starches from Bob's Red Mill products and the remainder from the bulk grain section of a large international farmers market near me. The prices at the Farmers market were about 50-75% less than Bobs (for organic). I have a grain grinder and have purchased the grains called for in the book and will be grinding my own flour for the next big batch of mixes (and will post my results as my grinder will not get quite as powdery a result as commercially ground flours). I am using xanthan gum right now but want to experiment with the psyllium husk alternative soon (the two ingredients the authors use to approximate some type of "rise" in the bread. I hope others who have actually tried these recipes will be generous in posting their experiences.I share this because I priced out the cost to make each batch of mix. It cost ~$9.95 to make 4.3# of #1 all purpose mix. That will provide the flour to make ~7-1/2 of the basic boule recipe. With yeast, sugar, and salt that comes to about $1.50 per finished boule. It cost ~$9.85 to make 4# of the #2 whole grain mix. That will provide the flour to make ~10 loaves of the 100% whole grain loaf. The whole grain loaf calls for the addition of some other flours/grains (including my favorite version with buckwheat). The cost for my finished loaves of the 100% whole grain was ~$1.70. The most expensive loaf made thus far was the seeded whole grain at $2.20.I started off with the #1 and #2 mixes as per the book. I've made changes in my quest for a great gluten-free bread and know this will be an ongoing process. I've found that both mixes make a much better bread with some millet flour and oat flour in the mix. I add some teff flour to the #2 mix as well. I don't care for the results using just white rice flour in the #1 mix so I use a blend of white and brown rice flours.I highly recommend you not bake with the mixed doughs until after at least two days in the refrigerator. Gluten-free breads really develop a much better and more complex taste with this longer period and all of the grains are fully hydrated. I use the "old dough" technique that I used when making regular breads and that also helps to create a much better loaf (save some of your old dough and mix it into the next batch--simple).You definitely will have the best results if you weigh the ingredients--they are so very different from wheat flour in how they fill a measuring cup.If it's hot outside and you don't want your kitchen to be miserable, I've had good results using my cast iron dutch oven on my gas grill. I turn on the two outside burners, preheat the dutch oven and lid to 450, toss some corn meal in the dutch oven and plop the dough in. From there cook as if in oven. If you use cornmeal on your pizza peel you know how quickly 450 ovens burn the stray cornmeal so you also eliminate that yucky smell from your house. My next experiment from this cookbook is to try the bread in a crockpot. I have to make sure mine can be used without water and if so will update with results of that experiment. In summary I like that this book is simple enough for a beginner but allows more seasoned bakers (and perhaps even pros!) to use ingredients and techniques that they love (sourdough starter, old doughs, longer ferments, stones, dutch ovens, whatever works for you). You definitely will have the best results if you weigh the ingredients--they are so very different from wheat flour in how they fill a measuring cup.If it's hot outside and you don't want your kitchen to be miserable, I've had good results using my cast iron dutch oven on my gas grill. In all seriousness, this makes the only decent GF bread I've tried since being diagnosed. Is it exactly like wheat bread? No. Is it tasty and good? Yes. You can bake it in a Dutch oven if you like it crusty, you can bake it in a loaf pan for sandwiches, or free form. I used 1/2 batch for the loaf pictured, and would probably go 1/3 next time. Toasts well. This is the rare GF book that's worth the investment. I use a stand mixer to make the dough, and then pop it in the fridge until I want to bake.

I am so excited about this book! I had their other book before I found out I couldn't eat gluten and I adored it. It took years to give it away because I was so sad not to be able to make crunchy artisan bread. Then I discovered they made a gluten free book and now I am back to making bread every day! This is such a wonderful book. Follow the directions, use a scale and do yourself a favor and use a clay pot for baking your bread in. No fiddling around with the pizza stone or wooden slider or steamer tray... Just put the loaf in there with the lid on, cook for 20 minutes (it will steam inside) and remove lid to bake for the rest of the time. Produces excellent crusty loaves, easy to clean. This book rocks!

This book is an absolute must if you're going gluten free. After nearly six month of trying expensive and mediocre frozen breads, this is like an oasis in the desert! The recipe is very easy to follow and the bread turns out great. Far more flavorful and cost effective than buying from the grocery store. Even my picky husband gobbled it up.Go ahead and order the flours with your shipment. Their website gives you the master recipe. Just make sure you buy enough rice flour to begin.

I love this book. My son has celiac and in desperation I've turned to (gulp) baking my own bread. I use the master recipe, stick a vat of it in my refrigerator, and take some out whenever he wants bread - I form it into rolls, flat bread, and pretzels. I haven't tried the other recipes yet, but just the basic system alone is worth the price of the book. BTW - although the authors recommend Bob's Red Mill flours, I can't use those because of a nut allergy. I've been using Authentic Foods Flours for the basic blend and it's turned out perfectly. P.S. I'm a TERRIBLE baker. If I can do it, you can do it. Seriously.

This is the first book I know of that allows Vegans to not be perfect without guilting them. This is an imperfect world, and the vegan community is like Democrats vs. Republicans. If you don't do it "their" way, you're damned. Sorry, but that's what it's turned into. Folks, this is an imperfect world. Just do the best you can. For me, that means avoiding obvious meat, fish, fowl, dairy and eggs, but allowing incidental animal by-products in an otherwise vegan food. This has allowed me not to go obsessive compulsive crazy. For you it might be different. I know this book is geared toward younger folks, but I wish it wasn't, because it applies to all. I'm 63, and I wish I had this book years ago. This book is like a sigh of relief.

I saw the author on Dr. Oz. Decided immediately to purchase this cookbook. I do not like to eat meat for ethical & health reasons & have been searching for a good cookbook with easy to make recipes that I can cook for family & friends. I have read the cookbook completely. I am really looking forward to making some of her recipes. Great price for a very good cookbook.

Great book for someone who doesn't want to go fully vegan, but isn't afraid to try some vegan healthy choices.

The first recipes we've tried are Fabulous. Definitely a help in staying out of eating "ruts" and yet maintaining our chosen way of eating.

Really well-organized and easy to read. Simple, straight-forward ideas and recipes. Great!

very enlightening. reminded me of all the things I already knew and made me rethink and remember the sadness. but the sadness has turned to taking action and being as veganish as I can!

Great book about becoming vegan.

Love it and can't wait to try out the recipes

The Story of Earth: The First 4.5 Billion Years, from Stardust to Living Planet

Review

“I’m not competent to assess the accuracy of Robert Hazen’s thesis about geological and biological history, but I am competent to judge it a fascinating story, far more alive than you might guess if all you knew was the subject was old dead (?!) rocks.”—Bill McKibben, bestselling author of Eaarth: Making a Life on a Tough New Planet“With infectious enthusiasm for his subject, Hazen introduces readers to Earth’s defining moments . . . [and] argues that understanding the interplay between Earth’s geological and biological pasts can help us predict and prepare for the future of life on our planet.”—Saron Yitbarek, Discover“Hazen takes us on one of the grandest tours of them all—the 4.5 billion year history of our planet. From the atoms of the crust of the Earth come our bodies, the entire living world, and this exciting book. Read Hazen and you will not see Earth and life in the same way again.” —Neil Shubin, paleontologist and bestselling author of Your Inner Fish“Concise and colourful  . . . Drawing on the latest research and influenced by advances in astrobiology, Hazen takes a radical standpoint . . . to tell the amazing tale of our planet’s intertwined living and non-living spheres.”—Birger Schmitz, Nature“A fascinating new theory on the Earth’s origins written in a sparkling style with many personal touches . . . Hazen offers startling evidence that ‘Earth’s living and nonliving spheres’ have co-evolved over the past four billion years.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred)“Exceptionally readable [and] user-friendly . . . Science junkies and readers interested in the environment will find Hazen’s arguments compelling and his overview of Earth’s tumultuous history captivating.”—Carl Hays, Booklist“Hazen has a gift for explaining science in lay terms, and even readers with a minimal understanding of geology, chemistry, and physics will find this book riveting."—Nancy R. Curtis, Library Journal“Hazen illuminates the origins of Earth and the origins of life [in] a thoroughly accessible book, mixing a variety of scientific disciplines to tell an unforgettable story.”—Publishers Weekly"The Story of Earth is that rare book that can transform the way you see the world. By synthesizing a vast span of time and knowledge into crisp, delightful prose, Hazen really does make our planet into a story, and a compelling one. I was left with a new sense of context for our place in this galactic home.”—Charles Wohlforth, author of The Fate of Nature and The Whale and the Supercomputer

My science training is severely lacking in historical geology, so I've always wanted to read a good textbook on the subject, but textbooks are very dry reading. So, I've always been on the lookout for a well written book about the evolution of the earth in a geological as well as biological context. Robert M. Hazen did just that with this book and he did an excellent job of making the earth a character with a story. From the formation of the solar system to the eventual probable demise of the earth 5 billion years from now, he describes what happened and how we know or believe it happened that way. He lays out the processes and the evidence in a descriptive manner that sparks the imagination. His narrative style is engaging and it's not hard to find yourself wondering what it would have been like to be there as it happened, which is where my only criticism comes in. A reader of this book book would have enormously benefited from photographs, illustrations, maps and artist renderings of what he so vividly describes. If possess a good imagination and have some familiarity with geology, this is a wonderful read. Otherwise, you'll be hard pressed to visualize what Hazen describes, even though he describes it quite well.

A good basic information source for Earth's history. It is comprehensive as a book of its size can be, but hits many of the really important topics. It has given me many insights that I haven't been able to glean from my reading of various science--for layperson--magazines (cf Science News, Astronomy Scientific American) over the years. I finally decided I was tired of not knowing enough about shields and cratons, and how the first landmasses appeared. But the book is much richer than that. This wonderful book deals in part with the development of the planet from the accretion of solar rocks, and even before. It's all a wonderful wild ride. From the Big Bang's production of hydrogen to the development of life here. And a final consideration of the future. I came away with an appreciation of just how recent multicellular creatures are, how recent the oxygen in the atmosphere. Indeed, when people suggest that life was delivered to Earth via comets, I know just how abysmally ignorant they are. But the book also needs to be updated. Since its appearance there have been many new developments. But those do not detract from the relevance of the book as it stands. And to consider that Earth formed within and is only going to be within the habitable zone of its orbiting the sun for perhaps less than the same span that eukaryotes have been here. 500,000,000 years is only a fraction of Earth's history!Cheers!

I can't say enough good things about The Story of Earth. Even though I have a doctorate in biological science from decades ago, I found literally hundreds of ideas and facts I was totally unaware of. For example, I had no idea the moon was formed by "the Big Thwack" with proto-earth of a very early planet called "Thea", nor that the weathering of rock is a far bigger sequesterer of carbon dioxide than are all plants on earth. Nor that there is now a real debate about an abiogenic origin of the earth's petroleum resources. The author does a fantastic job of describing how the evolution of life on earth - going back billions of years, far earlier than the pre-Cambrian - is totally bound up with the evolution of minerals and geology of the planet. Us short-lived humans are actually lucky we are not around long enough to experience most of the repeated cataclysms (asteroid impacts, massive volcanic explosions, continental drift) that rock this planet from the distant past to the distant future. Absolutely fascinating book. (Note: The author could include a bibliography and a glossary on his website, for those who are interested). The only negative I found in the book was at the end he had a discourse about humans colonizing Mars or a moon of Jupiter if the Earth was becoming uninhabitable. I thought that was all absurdly far-fetched, considering the immense -- or most likely impossible -- technological difficulties and the unbelievable cost (like quintillions of dollars). Humans colonizing space is going to remain in the realm of science fiction, I am convinced. I'm afraid we are stuck with the fate of the 3rd planet from the sun, whatever that turns out to be.

Wow! This book, written for a popular audience without talk down to them, was informative as well as interesting. Hazen draws on diverse fields such as astronomy, paleontology, and geophysics to paint a history of the planet we call home. His story telling method includes personal anecdotes smoothly transitioning into scientific evidence to bring those who might be venturing into historical geology for the first time into the fold and, eventually, along for the ride. The only complaint I have is that the lack of illustrations of some of the topics, such as the motion of the protocontinents, would have made this book nearly a required read for any geology course. As it is, any student who had trouble finding a spark of interest in geology would be well advised to read this book to whet their appetite for a deeper understanding. One section which was especially compelling was the section on the future of Earth. In discussing global climate change and its impact, Hazen correctly draws a distinction between saving the Earth and preserving humanity's future. The evidence he puts forth in a stark and no-nonsense manner would seem to bury any argument that humans have "nothing to worry about."

I bought this book to prepare to teach a class on historical geology, and ended up making it a required textbook for the class. For people interested in learning about Earth processes, their cycles and how they can be applied to our lives today, it is a great resource. The author devotes most of the book to describing how Earth history teaches us how the Earth works. He avoids a plodding presentation of geologic eons, eras, and periods; and also avoids an endless discussion of long extinct species. The book includes discussions of recent research and space exploration programs. It is up to date, relevant and interesting.

I Have been Dying to get MarleneN Zennek's Story since the beginning of the Ice Planet Barbarians seriesand was over the moon excited for Barbarians Seduction it's Exactly what I was craving! Scorchingly Hot Romance, Epic Adventure, Suspense, Danger, Heart Melting Sweetness, Wickely Funny Humor N so much more!Ruby Dixon never disappoints! I Loved Every moment with Marlene N Zennek They are Deliciously Adorable together!!! She is this Saucy little French Doll, Loving, Fierce, and full of Mischief! And He is this Strong Silent Hunter, So Sweet Serious, and Protective with a Sexy Intensity that only Marlene brings out in him!I love their Beautiful little girl she is such a wonderful mix of both her parents! Talk about a Cuteness over load! 💙I can't wait for the next book need My Ruby Fix!!! 5 Shinning Stars all the way!

I really love this series and all of the series connected to it. Thank you Ruby Dixon for giving me such an awesome and creative escape into your imagination. I love that you are returning to the original group for the stories we never got to experience. If you are new to this series STOP go back to book 1 and start there you will be truly sorry if you don’t. This is a full length book with a HEA, no cheating, and no cliffhangers as usual with this series. This is Marlene and Zennek’s story. Zennek is one of the only tribe members with a large extended family. He is extremely shy and blushes at the drop of a hat. He is floored by Marlene’s bold behavior and is ecstatic when he resonates to her almost immediately. Marlene is the only French woman in the original group of human women. She has deep rooted beliefs that stem from her late Maman and her culture. She is taken by the big shy blue alien who steals peeks at her while blushing furiously. She decides he will be hers. She can’t help but tease him into action and seduce him into her furs. What’s also great about this story is we get to experience when the couple first meet and 8 years later where the last book in the series left off. It is a wonderful combination and a great addition to the series. It is well written and the storyline is fluid with just enough humor, adventure, and steamy scenes. It’s worth the read and the reread and the excellent reviews and certainly the price. Enjoy!NOTE TO THE AUTHOR.....I know you are kidding but don’t scare a loyal reader like that with jokes about plagues. I had a hard enough time reading it in your Drakoni series. You rock Ruby Dixon I own and have read and reread all of your books. Please keep writing!

Ruby once again doesn’t disappoint! I adored this story. While I do love a cocky Alpha, my heart just melts at a shy dirty talking male . Zennek does it for me.This is a story that you could read as a stand-alone, but it is so much better if you know all the back stories. I would recommend reading it after the main group gets matched up. You could read it before the second group arrives. It mostly focus on the couple, and has a few other character interactions. I am so glad Marlene has her own story and that we got to see how her and Zennek began, plus you get to see their relationship 8 years later. This story is full of dirty talk, and the dirty 😏 but also a lot of love and tenderness. Sweet displays of fatherhood, and this adorable line from Zennek: “I will always come back to you, my mate. You think I could leave your side forever? Impossible. I am not whole without you.” Carry on Ruby, continue your magic fingers and words. I will be a faithful follower til the end.

I've read them all. I own them all. (The dragons too). This little book is one of the very best. I loved the overall tale. Good job Ruby. Very good job. I don't believe in spoilers so I will never tell the story in a review, but I loved Marlene and Zennek very much. They are individually great characters. ;)

LOVED this book! So heartfelt 💕As always Ruby does not disappoint, lol, I was just so surprised that it brought me to tears too. Well I’ll add this to my collection and definitely enjoy again.

Marlene is a spunky, go-with-the-flow, maneater. She is SO French!! Zennek is shy and quiet, at least until alone with Marlene! I love all of Ruby's books and heroines but Marlene is my favorite. I honestly thought I'd never say something like that. But Marlene and Zennek's interactions are so funny, endearing and fun. This was a sweet read, nothing really heavy.

I was so happy to get a book with Marlene and Zennek, I loved going back and seeing a story with one of the original women. This series is amazing Ruby is the only author I've read that has kept a series so interesting and intriguing 20 books in. I can't wait to read the next book.

This book is just as great as all the previous ones and holds your attention from beginning to end? It has action, drama, family love, and steamy hot romance with awesome characters? This is a series that makes you smile and laugh out loud and highly recommended?

All it lists, is every character and what they do, but it doesn't say anything about world of light, nothing about the bosses, character unlock paths through classic mode, absolutely nothing. Honestly the smash bros melee/brawl/wii u manuals had more info.Raising it to 4 stars to be fair. As a quick character reference guide it works when you quickly need to look up how a move works and its uses. But a reference guide is all it is, it has no other info of the game, modes or unlockables.

Do you want to know every minute detail about every smash character as well as all sorts of technical terms used by pro players? Cool, you'll love this guide!Do you want a walk-through of the world of light? A map? A list of all the spirits? Then DON'T BUY THIS.Seriously, this is exclusively meant for those who want to overanalyze each character or train to be the very best. I'll be returning this. Not what I expected.

The cover is beautiful. The pages are pretty high quality in my opinion. It only contains information pertaining to every character in the game thus far (no small feat), as other reviewers have mentioned. Still, this is great for a Smash collector or someone who has been buying guidebooks for every small installment. The paperback is compact, easy to place on a bookshelf. The upper right hand corner was a little bent, trying to smooth it out now. Still, happy with my purchase. Sad to see guidebooks go by the wayside, but I'm glad we got one more Prima for this latest entry of Smash.

It doesn't cover Adventure mode, Spirits, or anything other than character movesets and some gameplay mechanics, but its depth and illustrations make for a cool manual. Every fighter gets a brief overview, then each move gets anywhere from 1 complete sentence to a few paragraphs. Reading all of the summaries was a fun time-sink, though I felt that the authors' least favorite characters were apparent in the overviews with less written. I must note that the ink of the illustrations sticks to other pages on ocassion, leaving white spots.

While this so-called"strategy guide" has in-depth information about each fighter in the game, that's all it has.No guides to anything else, such as the all-new Spirit Mode (which can be very confusing and frustrating for new or younger players), or even the Classic Mode. If I'd known that that's all this was, I wouldn't have purchased it.While not completely useless, it hardly meets the requirements to be called a "Strategy guide"

This only covers the fighters moves....nothing on world of light or any of the spirits in the game. Really disappointed...

Do not get the paperback unless you are planning to get the hardback also. If you are only getting one then it must be the hardback for additional content and viewing prices don't skim out because the difference of the cost.

Note: this isn’t a game guide. It is a great coffee table book. Got it to give as a gift and they loved it! Some really cool insights into how the characters work

I used this guide during a recent visit to Provence and found it useful, interesting and intelligent. In fact some of the chapters on the culture, history and lifestyle were worth reading in themselves. It provides lots of factual information about the sights and provides useful tips. However, is not a guide to restaurants or hotels so if this is what you are looking for then this book is not for you. Personally I prefer this as many guides just sound like advertising puffs when they describe restaurants and bars.Another plus point is that it does not talk down to the reader as if he or she is an idiot who needs a dumbed down explanation of everything as Lonely Plant and similar brands often do. Nor is it politically correct, thanks goodness. On the other hand, it could have been edited as much of the information is of dubious value. After all, not everything in Provence is as great as its admirers make out and many of the endless villages, towns and ports are basically not worth visiting. For example, on Bonnieux it says: ”The village was well known for its bread and you can find out about its history at the Musee de la Boulangerie… housed in a former bakery”. Another place is apparently worth visiting because villagers built a low wall in the 16th century to keep out the plague. Yawn, yawn!

A good guide to get an overview of Provence, France's most enticing region, with photos that will want to make you catch the next flight there. Limited information on accommodation and restaurants but I use Trip Advisor for that stuff.

Very good over view of Provence & the French Riviera without getting too deep. The photos and maps were very helpful.

This book was not very helpful for us. The book is broken up by region, with a few paragraphs for each that region and major cities. The major highlights are listed in the paragraph. At the end, they have a list of places to each and stay. We found that information was almost useless and just a list of places to eat. It was hard to use the book to decide on places to visit and/or eat. This book does cover a broad region so maybe we expected to much. We left it in the recycling bin upon our checkout from the hotel.

I was surprised that the book was physically small. I know that it would be a short book but I assumed that the book size was that of the typical Oxford/Rutledge university publications. The print is a size or two smaller than usual (14 point) so it is somewhat physically difficult to read. The material is presented very well and covers a lot of areas of the philosophy of law. I would gladly pay $2-3 more if the book size were to be slightly larger so the font is a typical university printing.

The Very Short Introduction... series has several advantages over other series that serve the same function of providing an introduction to a subject matter. The main advantage is physical size. Mr. Clark refers to it as the perfect "plane" book. That's true. But even better, it is a true pocket book. They fit easily into the back of one's jeans waiting for the odd moment to be pulled out and used. They can usually be easily read in a couple of hours. But that format has limitations. I find that the VSI volumes that are devoted to a single thinker are much more useful than the ones that cover a broad subject matter. (It inspires me to a bad pun. "A very short intro to a very big subject" is almost Oxfordmoronic. O, never mind.)At best, when dealing with a subject matter as opposed to an individual thinker the VSIs are concise intros. But sometimes, as with the VSI to The Philosophy of Law the treatment seems shallow. Wacks is very good on some of his thinkers: Rawls, Dworkin, Hart, Weber, and Habermas are all fairly well done. Some of the others are not as well handled- I found his treatment of Locke, Marx, Foucault to be cursory at best. It felt like a survey of a survey. So take it for what it is. This volume is a very quick overview of a lot of thinkers (see Mr. Clark's review for a good listing). Some of these thinkers are important enough to deserve their own volume in the series (Locke, Marx, and Habermas). Others like Rawls and Dworkin deserve such treatment. Prof. Wacks has provided us with a quick and cheap way to orient ourselves to future reading in this field. I just cannot help but feel that he could have done better. That if he had taken the time to flesh out his presentation for another fifty or so pages that it would have been a much more useful member of the VSI family.

The philosophy of law is one of the few fields of philosophy that have remained legitimate in the sense that practical questions and contemplations are not eschewed. Too often philosophical debate wanders into conceptual hallways that could best be described as mazes, but one cannot get to their centers even with keeping one hand on the wall. One gets forever lost in the entanglement of concepts, with nothing ever settled, and if an idea is deemed to be practical it follows that it must be uninteresting or illegitimate. But legal reasoning is a requirement for human well being, and then the question arises as to what system of concepts best encapsulates it. Many questions arise when contemplating proper philosophical frameworks for legal contemplation, and many of these are answered in this book, written of course for those readers who need a quick introduction to the subject matter. No reader would expect an in-depth discussion of the philosophy of law from this book, but there is enough in it to enable readers to investigate specialized topics of interest. The author begins the book by stating that the philosophy of law is "rarely an abstract, impractical pursuit", and he explains the (weak) demarcation between "descriptive" and "normative" legal theory. Because of its place in history, the author discusses the doctrine of natural law first, and this discussion sheds considerable light on why many modern conservatives are committed to this philosophy of law: it seems to make legitimate the social hierarchies that these conservatives insist we respect. The doctrine of legal positivism is then discussed, and in this regard the most interesting (and disconcerting) discussion is the "pure theory of law" of Hans Kelsen. The Kelsen theory is interesting since legal norms in this conception are all relational: any one particular norm must be justified or authorized by another norm, giving in the end a large hierarchy of norms with a "basic norm" sitting on top of the hierarchy and representing a completely formal or hypothetical construct. One should not view it as arbitrary though, since its selection is based on whether or not the legal order is "effective". The author does not really elaborate on this notion, but the open-ended nature of his discussion motivates the reader to investigate this doctrine in more detail through outside reading. If read in the light of current controversies in the interpretation of legal statutes by the United States Supreme Court, probably the most interesting discussion in the book concerns the legal philosophy of Ronald Dworkin. Dworkin himself is very critical of recent decisions that have been made by the Supreme Court in the last two years, but his criticisms in this regard are not brought out in this book. What is discussed is a conception of the law that seems "extralegal" in that it views legal contexts as being intertwined with moral and political ones. This makes legal reasoning more than just an application of rules, and forces the judge to consider the consequences that his edicts will have on the community.Because it is still in its infancy as a legal philosophy, considerations of jurisprudence brought about by discoveries in neuroscience are not discussed in this book. Called by some the "neuroscience of law" this branch of jurisprudence will probably not be taken seriously by the majority of legal philosophers for some time to come. This reviewer recommends the book by Brent Garland for those who want to supplement the reading of this book by considering what is at the present time very exciting developments in both neuroscience and legal philosophy.

Met my expectations exactly. Easier read, you don't have to work hard to understand it. Wacks is a great writer, fun to read.
